    The highlights of this cruise

Greenland, the largest island in the world, is a multifaceted treasure trove for explorers. Imposing icebergs drifting through Disko Bay will leave you speechlesas, as will the contrasts of flourishing tundra and mighty mountain ranges. Inuit settlements such as Sisimiut on the west coast set cultural accents. Pure solitude, on the other hand, can be found in the seclusion of the North-East Greenland National Park, where man is only a marginal phenomenon.

    show complete itinerary

On this expedition, your logbook will be filled with experiences that are not written anywhere else – such as on Baffin Island right at the start. The scene is set by fjords and glaciers. Used as a research area for NASA, Devon Island resembles a Mars-like landscape. Just like on Beechey lsland with traces of the Franklin Expedition of 1845, you will repeatedly follow in the wake of famous pioneers – also in Lancaster Sound, whose namesake hoped to find a Northwest Passage here. In Lady Ann Strait, high cliffs line the shores. Regions that once took explorers to their limits and that you can now reach in comfort and safety. What route will the ice open up through the northern Canadian Arctic? When your ship reaches Jones Sound, you will be greeted by thick-billed murres and perhaps musk oxen. Will you continue through Cardigan Strait or Hell Gate? The decision will be made then. The rarely visited west coast of Ellesmere Island promises to be fascinating. Keep an eye out for bearded seals while cruising in Norwegian Bay or explore the world’s northernmost weather station, Eureka, if the station manager allows it. Another Zodiac area is Axel Heiberg Island, home to Arctic hares, polar foxes and polar bears. Your final chapter is on the west coast of Greenland: in Uummannaq with its colourful wooden houses or in Ilulissat on a hike to the ice fjord. Disko Bay rounds off your expedition with plenty of polar magic. Marvel at the sparkling scenery from the ship or from a Zodiac. Works of art created by human hands will inspire you in Sisimiut, where you will sum up this route with one word: unforgettable.

---- The ice conditions determine the course here (see map).

The itinerary depends on official approval, weather and ice conditions. The natural experiences and wildlife sightings described are possibilities on this expedition and are not guaranteed.

    Your ship - HANSEATIC spirit

    The new expedition class

The naming ceremony of the HANSEATIC spirit took place off the coast of Helgoland on 24 August 2021. Together with its structurally identically sister ships HANSEATIC inspiration (2019) and HANSEATIC spirit (2019), the small and state-of-the-art expedition ship explores remote destinations and visits the world’s most fascinating natural landscapes on challenging routes.

The new expedition class – which offers space for a maximum of 230 guests (or 199 guests on Antarctic cruises and Spitsbergen circumnavigations) – sets standards in terms of variety, comfort and personal space. This is why our ship has more open deck space than any other expedition ship. Find out more!
