    The highlights of this cruise

Look forward to adventures ahead – between the oceans, the HANSEATIC inspiration opens new doors to tropical worlds each day. Follow the tracks of exotic animals in pristine natural paradises – as in Quepos at the start of your cruise. In lush rainforests and on an active hike in Manuel Antonio National Park*, the on-board experts will be sure to hone your eye for sloths, iguanas, capuchin monkeys and many other native species. Explore Bahia Santa Elena, a protected marine area with a fjord-like bay and dense tropical forest, on a thrilling expedition day with the Zodiacs. From San Juan del Sur, a panoramic trip takes you to Masaya Volcano*, which regularly produces clouds of smoke to this day. Enjoy marvellous views of the entire region and Lake Nicaragua along the way. Near Playa Panama, you will discover the habitat of around 250,000 birds by boat on a visit to Palo Verde National Park*. In Puntarenas, a jewel second to none awaits you on a hike* in the Carara nature reserve. Isla Iguana invites you to relax on the soft sands and swim in the crystal-clear waters. People are a rarity here, but there is a chance of spotting magnificent frigate birds. Perhaps you might fulfil a dream of snorkelling with sea turtles. What is life like here in nature? The people of the Embera tribe give you fascinating insights deep in the Darien jungle in the Gulf of San Miguel. On the subsequent daytime passage through the Panama Canal, marvel at the green jungle and wild mangrove forests from the ship’s many open deck areas – with commentary from your experts. A stunning conclusion to this cruise.

The itinerary depends on official approval. The natural experiences and wildlife sightings described are possibilities on this expedition and are not guaranteed.

    * The shore activities are not included in the cruise price and are in the planning stage. Subject to change.

    Your ship - HANSEATIC inspiration

    The new expedition class

The naming ceremony of the HANSEATIC inspiration took place in Hamburg on 11 October 2019. Together with its structurally identically sister ships HANSEATIC nature (2019) and HANSEATIC spirit (2021), the small and state-of-the-art expedition ship explores remote destinations and visits the world’s most fascinating natural landscapes on challenging routes.

The new expedition class – which offers space for a maximum of 230 guests (or 199 guests on Antarctic cruises and Spitsbergen circumnavigations) – sets standards in terms of variety, comfort and personal space. This is why our ship has more open deck space than any other expedition ship. Find out more! HANSEATIC inspiration was launched in October 2019.

Panama (Isla Iguana, Gulf of San Miguel)

The Gulf of San Miguel is located off the usual tourist paths on the Pacific coast of Panama and is a sprawling marine basin that stands out for its natural beauty and peaceful environment. This Gulf, known for its biological diversity, provides protection for the lush mangrove forests, which in turn serve as nurseries for numerous marine species. Remote and barely developed, this area is home to indigenous communities such as the Kuna and Emberá, who have preserved their traditional way of life. The Gulf of San Miguel is therefore a place to experience nature in its purest form and to develop a deeper understanding of the harmonious coexistence of humans and the environment.

Daytime passage through the Panama Canal

The Panama Canal stands as one of the most impressive technological wonders of the modern world. This artificial waterway is a vital maritime passage that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, bypassing the need to navigate the dangerous and time-consuming waters around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America. Stretching approximately 82 kilometers through the Isthmus of Panama, the canal serves as a crucial shortcut that has not only revolutionized shipping routes but also significantly influenced international trade. Sophisticated lock systems are at the heart of the Panama Canal, lifting and lowering ships to different levels of the waterway. This allows vessels of all sizes and classes to overcome the 26-meter height difference between the oceans. Through this innovation, the canal has significantly reduced navigation time and fuel consumption, leading to lower transportation costs and a more efficient international supply chain. A unique feature of the Panama Canal is its so-called mules - special towing locomotives that should not be confused with conventional trains. These powerful machines are specially designed to maneuver the massive ships precisely through the locks. Anchored on steel rails with impressive pulling power, these locomotives work in sync to keep the ship centered in the lock chamber, preventing collisions and damage.
