    The highlights of this cruise

There is no more spectacular way to witness the contrasts of South America than with one of this continent’s engineering wonders. Enjoy a daytime passage through the Panama Canal. Gigantic locks reveal the past and present of the waterway. Once you arrive in the Gulf of San Miguel, you will meet the Embera tribe in the Darien jungle. Look forward to the exotic flora and fauna in Utria National Park in Colombia. A wooden walkway leads you through the mangrove swamp and anteaters, howler monkeys, sloths, hummingbirds and other animals take centre stage on a jungle hike. Whether or not the privateer Sir Francis Drake really buried his silver on Isla de la Plata remains unknown. But you will find the true treasure: the habitat of the lava lizards. Following Paita which tells of pirate attacks in the 16th century, Isla Lobos de Tierra with its huge population of sea lions amazes. If the authorities grant permission, the Zodiacs will take you ashore, where pelicans and blue-footed boobies live. Near Salaverry, traces of ancient civilisations are found in the ruins of Chan Chan* and in the Moche Valley* with the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. Equally exciting from Callao are Lima* or the temple ruins* of Huaca Huallamarca. The Paracas Peninsula has natural treasures in store. The Islas Ballestas* are teeming with seals and seabirds. A flight over the mysterious Nazca Lines* reveals monumental figures and animal images in the desert. As the “Sugar Loaf Island”, the Isla Pan de Azucar sweetens your last Zodiac ride of this expedition with an opportunity to observe Peruvian pelicans.

The itinerary depends on official approval. The natural experiences and wildlife sightings described are possibilities on this expedition and are not guaranteed.

    * The shore activities are not included in the cruise price and are in the planning stage. Subject to change.

Daytime passage through the Panama Canal

The Panama Canal stands as one of the most impressive technological wonders of the modern world. This artificial waterway is a vital maritime passage that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, bypassing the need to navigate the dangerous and time-consuming waters around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America. Stretching approximately 82 kilometers through the Isthmus of Panama, the canal serves as a crucial shortcut that has not only revolutionized shipping routes but also significantly influenced international trade. Sophisticated lock systems are at the heart of the Panama Canal, lifting and lowering ships to different levels of the waterway. This allows vessels of all sizes and classes to overcome the 26-meter height difference between the oceans. Through this innovation, the canal has significantly reduced navigation time and fuel consumption, leading to lower transportation costs and a more efficient international supply chain. A unique feature of the Panama Canal is its so-called mules - special towing locomotives that should not be confused with conventional trains. These powerful machines are specially designed to maneuver the massive ships precisely through the locks. Anchored on steel rails with impressive pulling power, these locomotives work in sync to keep the ship centered in the lock chamber, preventing collisions and damage.

    Gulf of San Miguel

The Gulf of San Miguel is located off the usual tourist paths on the Pacific coast of Panama and is a sprawling marine basin that stands out for its natural beauty and peaceful environment. This Gulf, known for its biological diversity, provides protection for the lush mangrove forests, which in turn serve as nurseries for numerous marine species. Remote and barely developed, this area is home to indigenous communities such as the Kuna and Emberá, who have preserved their traditional way of life. The Gulf of San Miguel is therefore a place to experience nature in its purest form and to develop a deeper understanding of the harmonious coexistence of humans and the environment.

    Utria National Park/Colombia

With its rich culture of indigenous Emberá and Afro-Colombian communities that harmoniously blend into the natural environment, the park also offers visitors the chance to immerse themselves in local culture and traditions. Utría National Park is truly a magical place where the deep blue of the ocean meets the emerald green jungle, and visitors can experience an unparalleled wilderness experience in Colombia.
