Scheduled flight from Germany to Keflavik
Journey to Reykjavik/Iceland
Reykjavik/Iceland, departure 19.00 hrs
from 7.00 to 14.00 hrs
Volcanoes and megaliths jut mysteriously into the sky, glacier fields gleam in the clear light and dunes form light lines along the coast. The HANSEATIC nature will reveal a rugged and magical world of beauty between Reykjavik and Hamburg. The largest of the Westman Islands, Heimaey, kicks off the adventure around 10 km (6.2 mi.) off the south coast of Iceland. The petrified evidence of the Eldfell eruption is sure to spark the imagination of any explorer. Marvel at the natural contrasts from above on a scenic flight above volcanoes and waterfalls* – carpets of green moss, glacial rivers and Eyjafjallajokull. Exhilarating natural experiences also await you in the rarely visited eastern fjords.
Djupivogur, from 7.30 to 19.00 hrs
Head out from Djupivogur on a glacier adventure to Vatnajokull* – Iceland’s largest glacier at around 8,000 km2 (3,089 mi.2), which you will explore by snowmobile. Or enjoy an extra-special natural spectacle in the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon*, one of Iceland’s jewels with its glittering icebergs.
Relaxation at sea
Kirkwall/Orkney Islands/Great Britain, from 10.00 to 18.00 hrs
To the north of Scotland lie the Orkney Islands and a world of prehistoric myths and magical places. St Magnus Cathedral in the small port town of Kirkwall is a magnificent vision of the medieval period. The historical treasures of Orkney* have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the carved stone giants in the Ring of Brodgar have been jutting into the air for over 4,000 years and the settlement of Skara Brae was inhabited as far back as the Neolithic period. Alternatively, a hike along the coastal cliffs* combines idyllic views with insights into the history in the form of brochs – round towers that date back to the Iron Age.
Aberdeen/Scotland, from 8.00 to 18.00 hrs
You’ll see why the historic university city of Aberdeen is called the “Silver City” as the many granite buildings shine in the Nordic light. The walking tour of Aberdeen, the city of flowers and granite* takes you through the old town with the medieval Cathedral Church of St Machar, through the old fishing village of Footdee, and through Duthie Park, where the winter gardens provide a tropical atmosphere. Castles, gardens and history shape your journey into the country’s interior to Royal Deeside and Balmoral Castle*, the summer residence of the royal family.
Relaxation at sea
List/Sylt, from 8.00 to 17.30 hrs
(lay time subject to the tides)
Sylt is the undisputed “queen of the North Sea” and one of Germany’s most popular islands. List, its most northerly community, is also well worth a visit. Experience the inimitable character of this natural paradise, a living artwork of lush green salt flats, heathland and dunes as far as the eye can see. A walk on the mudflats of Blidsel Bay* offers a panoramic view of Schleswig-Holstein’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ashore, you can explore the island on a vintage bus*, which will take you through a wandering dune landscape and past the North Frisian villages of Hornum and Keitum with their thatched-roof houses. Alternatively, you can relax by taking an e-bike across the island*.
Helgoland, from 7.00 to 13.00 hrs
Cruise on the Elbe
Arrival in the Port of Hamburg at around 23.00 hrs
Overnight stay on board
Discover one of North Germany’s most imposing natural landmarks: “Lange Anna” on Helgoland. The island is a breeding ground for northern gannets and many other species of bird. Common murres hunt for crabs and small fish on the Lummenfelsen. You, meanwhile, will hunt for spectacular panoramas on a 2.8 km (1.74 mi.) walk along the edge of the cliffs. The last leg of your explorations will take you to the small bird island of Scharhorn before the mouth of the Elbe comes into view at Cuxhaven and you head upriver to Hamburg.
