Alternatively, take an off-road vehicle* into the hinterlands or kayak* to the unmissable island fortress of Spinalonga.

This island is quintessentially Greek like no other. Black volcanic rock juts out of the sea and 300 m (984 ft) into the air to make for a fascinating contrast to the gleaming white houses.
