    The highlights of this cruise

The Chilean capital VALPARAISO has inspired numerous artists and writers with its picturesque location between green hills and its colourful houses. Enjoy this wonderful setting before heading off on your cruise across the Pacific the following morning. In the middle of the endless blue expanse lies ROBINSON CRUSOE ISLAND, with a name that truly has gone down in history: in the early 18th century, Alexander Selkirk spent many years here in complete isolation, and Daniel Defoe turned his story into world literature. Today this remote island is a biosphere reserve for Magellan penguins and Juan Fernandez firecrown hummingbirds.

The upcoming days at sea are for you and your dreams alone: leave everyday life in your wake and dive into a good book, or focus entirely on your well-being with our Vitality at Sea programme. After this period of inspiration, another Pacific legend will appear on the horizon: Ahu Ko te Riku, the only Moai statue with white coral eyes on EASTER ISLAND near HANGA ROA. With prominent noses and long ears, these colossal stone statues continue to baffle researchers. Hundreds of these figures, which weigh up to 250 t each, were overturned when James Cook landed on the island in 1774. Only in the 20th century did work get under way to right the statues. Set out in search of clues and enjoy the same view from Ahu Akivi* that the seven moai have been seeing for millennia. People love to tell stories on PITCARIN as well, especially the one about the mutiny on the Bounty. Most of the inhabitants are descendants of the stranded crew – follow in their footsteps as you walk around the small island.

A real treasure chest for explorers can be found on the MARQUESAS ISLANDS. The captain of the EUROPA will decide on the best destination based on the weather conditions. Bizarre peaks tower over the jungle canopy where many Polynesian people still maintain their traditional customs, such as imaginative body painting and traditional tribal dances. RANGIROA means “endless heaven” in Polynesian and you will actually find it difficult to tell the turquoise sea apart from the endless horizon as you snorkel in the bay. Let yourself drift in the calm water of the lagoon or discover an extraordinary treasure: precious black pearls are cultivated here at special pearl farms*. The next morning, the EUROPA will reach Papeete, TAHITI’S gateway to the world. Wander through the lively coastal city or visit the Paul Gauguin Museum* and see how the painter saw “his” paradise before setting off on your journey home on the following day – or keep your South Seas dream alive with the subsequent cruise.

    * The shore activities are not included in the cruise price and are in the planning stage. Subject to change.
