  • Classical Music

    Cuarteto Rotterdam

Today, concert halls and international tango festivals like in Amsterdam, Berlin und Paris and even Buenos Aires and North America can no longer be imagined without these four musicians who have always been able to inspire both concert-goers and tango dancers. They have won several prizes at international music competitions in Klingenthal (Germany), Trani (Italy) and Castelfidardo (Italy). Brought into being in 2004, the ensemble was named after its birthplace in the Netherlands, where, at that time, the three founding members, Michael Dolak, Susanne Cordula Welsch and Judy Ruks, were studying tango at the Rotterdam Academy for World Music. 2007 they moved together to Germany. Nowadays they are living in Berlin, Stuttgart and Paris. 2025 is a special year because they are celebrating their 20th anniversary on stage.

The quartet’s classic structure, consisting of bandoneón, violin, piano and double bass, provides a sound experience ranging between tradition and modernity. With their experience, creativity and imagination, this small orchestra conjures up a world of tango for all kinds of emotions.

  • Canarian World Music

    Hirahi Afonso

Hirahi is a timplist, but not one in the traditional sense. His style deviates from that of young Canarian timplists. At the age of sixteen, he relocated to Barcelona to study guitar, an experience that broadened his musical perspective and shaped his distinct approach to the timple. In Barcelona, a city known for nurturing new talent and where artists like Judith Neddermann and Silvia Pérez Cruz have emerged, Hirahi was exposed to contemporary sounds that would deeply influence his work. His compositions, often performed by inspiring vocalists, blend his unwavering Canarian roots with Mediterranean and Latin American rhythms - musical elements that have been a part of him since childhood. In his live performance, Hirahi introduces his latest album 'Lo puro'. The concert features intimate songs with memorable melodies, showcasing a repertoire that merges contemporary styles with diverse influences. The result is a modern, fresh performance that resonates with audiences of all ages.

    Artwork Jan Davidoff

Davidoff blurs the boundaries between figuration and abstraction. Total graphic reduction in black and white clearly emphasises the contrast between nature and culture, while abstractly lined up surfaces of the background suggest three-dimensionality to the viewer. The metal works in particular also use the instrument of fusion: the heterogeneously processed surfaces seek to play with the light so that the viewer perceives the depicted in a variety of ways through the reflection. The brightly coloured, contoured, almost woodcut-like paintings demonstrate the full range of vitality that nature and man can offer. Reflective surfaces, sometimes broken in on themselves, refer once again to the interplay, the antipodal nature of nature and culture. Davidoff perceives the world in his pictures as an organic cycle of creation and dissolution, the traces of which he depicts in his paintings. Like Anselm Kiefer or Günther Förg, Jan Davidoff often uses found objects from his environment in his works. For example, he uses patinated historical copper plates as well as industrial steel or glass alongside the canvas as a picture support. In this way, he creates the multi-layered pictures typical of the artist, in which the background and foreground seem to intertwine in many ways.
