Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Upgrade

Here you will find questions and answers about Hapag-Lloyd Cruises upgrades.

General

What is the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Upgrade Programme?

With the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Upgrade, guests have the opportunity to place a bid to upgrade from their originally booked cabin/suite category to a higher-category cabin/suite. As part of a bidding process, guests can submit a bid for a cabin or suite upgrade and, with a bit of luck, fulfil their wish for greater comfort on board.

What are the benefits of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Upgrade?

You have the option of travelling in a higher-class cabin or suite in return for an additional payment of your choosing. The specific upgrade cabin/suite will be allocated to you once your bid has been successfully accepted.

What exactly is an upgrade?

With an upgrade, you can enjoy your journey in a higher-category cabin or suite than the one you originally booked. The specific cabin/suite number will be allocated to you once your bid has been accepted.

Is the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Upgrade programme right for me?

The Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Upgrade programme is particularly suitable for guests who wish to take the opportunity to upgrade to a higher cabin or suite category, are flexible in their choice of cabin or suite, and are equally happy with their originally booked cabin or suite should their bid not be accepted.

Good to know: In the event of an upgrade, requests regarding specific cabin or suite numbers, facilities, deck level or side of the ship cannot be accommodated.

If certain features of your cabin or suite are particularly important to you, or if you would like to specifically secure a higher cabin or suite category, we recommend that you contact your booking agent. There, you can check the current availability and terms and conditions for a standard upgrade to a higher category.

Participation

Who can take part in the bidding process, and to which trips does this offer apply?

The upgrade programme is available on selected cruises. Only guests who have been selected by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises to take part and who are aged 18 or over are eligible to participate. The availability of this programme is not guaranteed on all cruises. Eligible guests will be informed by email of the opportunity to take part. The invitation is usually sent out around 105 days before the start of the cruise.

Can I take part if I’ve booked through a travel agency?

Yes. Even if you have booked your cruise through a travel agent, you can still take part in the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Upgrade programme, provided you have received a personal invitation to take part.

Can I take part if I have booked several cabins/suites?

No. If several cabins/suites have been booked under the same booking number, it is not currently possible to take part in the upgrade programme. If the cabins/suites have been booked under different booking numbers, an upgrade bid may be submitted separately and independently for each booking, provided that the respective bookings are eligible to participate.

Can I take part if I have a provisional booking (reservation)?

No. The Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Upgrade is available exclusively for confirmed bookings. The programme is not available for bookings with ‘Option’ status.

Can I take part if I’ve rebooked my trip?

If you rebook your cabin/suite category or your entire journey, any upgrade bids you have already submitted will be automatically cancelled. You will be notified of this by email. Whether you can then submit a new upgrade bid depends on whether your new booking still makes you eligible for the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Upgrade.

Place a bid

What cabin/suite upgrades can I choose?

Eligible guests may submit upgrade bids for all higher cabin/suite categories displayed on the offers page. It is not possible to confirm in advance exactly which categories will be available, and these may change during the offer period.

Can I bid for several cabin/suite categories at the same time?

Yes. Eligible guests may submit upgrade bids for all cabin/suite categories shown on the offers page. However, only one upgrade per cabin/suite may be accepted.

Which cabin/suite categories can I bid on?

The categories available for an upgrade bid depend on the cruise in question. Consequently, it is not possible to place bids for all cabin or suite categories on every cruise. The categories available for your trip are shown directly on the offer page. Good to know: The categories displayed on the offers page relate exclusively to the options available in the upgrade programme and may therefore differ from the cabin and suite categories available on the standard booking page.

Can I also bid for a different cabin or suite within the cabin or suite category I have booked?

No. Upgrades are always to a higher cabin/suite category than the one originally booked. A different location within the same category does not constitute an upgrade under the terms of the programme.

How many bids can I place per cabin/suite category?

An upgrade bid can be submitted for each cabin/suite category displayed. However, only one upgrade bid per cabin/suite can be accepted. If several bids are submitted, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises will decide which bid to accept.

Is there a minimum bid?

Yes. A minimum bid is displayed on the offer page for each cabin/suite category on offer. A lower bid cannot be submitted. Good to know: The offer always applies to the entire cabin/suite and not to individual guests.

Do I have a better chance of getting an upgrade if I bid higher?

In most cases, the highest bids for the relevant categories are accepted. However, the decision rests solely with Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. The specific criteria and procedures are confidential.

Can I choose the location or specific features of the upgraded cabin or suite myself?

No. The specific cabin/suite number will be allocated automatically once the bid has been successfully accepted. The location, deck, side of the ship and facilities may differ from those of the cabin or suite originally booked. The cabin or suite allocated to you may also be on a lower deck.

Can I view, amend or withdraw my bid at a later date?

Yes. You can view your current bids at any time on the bids page. Please use the invitation link you received by email. The bid may be amended or withdrawn up until the final bid submission deadline, provided it has not yet been accepted. The latest date for making a bid is three days before departure. Please note that once you have submitted your bid, we may accept it at any time.

I did not receive a confirmation email after submitting my bid. What can I do?

Confirmation that your bid has been received will be sent automatically to the email address you provided when placing your bid. Please therefore check the spam or junk mail folder of the relevant email account first. If you cannot find a confirmation of receipt there, you can log in again at any time using the link in your invitation email and check whether your bids have been successfully submitted. It is possible that a typo was made when entering the email address. The email address provided when submitting a bid cannot be changed at a later date. In this case, you can cancel your saved bids and then submit them again using the correct email address. Please check the email address you have entered carefully once more before submitting.

Decision

How and by when will I find out whether Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has accepted my bid?

Once you have submitted your bid, it may be accepted at any time up to 3 days before the start of your cruise. Acceptance may take place either shortly after the bid is submitted or at a later date. If your bid is accepted, you will be notified by email. You or your travel agent/booking office will then receive a new booking confirmation/invoice showing the new cabin/suite and the updated total price. If your bid is not accepted, you will be notified two days before the start of the cruise.

What happens if my bid isn't accepted?

If your bid is not accepted, your originally booked cabin/suite will remain unchanged. You will not receive an upgrade and there will be no additional charges.

Can I cancel or change my bid?

Yes. As long as the booking has not yet been confirmed by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, you may amend it or cancel it in full up to three days before the start of your cruise. To do this, you can log in again using the link in the invitation email or the link in the confirmation of receipt of your bid, which you received after submitting your bid. Please note that once you have placed your bid, it may be accepted at any time. From this point onwards, it is no longer possible to make any changes to or cancel the bid.

Can I decline the upgrade once it has been accepted by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises?

No. Once the bid has been accepted, the new cabin/suite will be allocated on a binding basis and the relevant upgrade surcharge will be charged. The upgrade cannot be declined afterwards. Furthermore, the entitlement to the originally booked cabin/suite is forfeited.

Payment

How and when do I pay for my upgrade after confirmation?

The cabin/suite surcharge will be shown on the updated booking confirmation/invoice in addition to the previously confirmed travel price. Payment will be made via the payment method specified in the booking once the booking has been transferred. Depending on when the bid is accepted, the surcharge is payable either together with the balance or – if the balance has already been paid – immediately upon receipt of the invoice.
Good to know: From 14 days before departure, payment of the cabin/suite surcharge can only be made by credit card; however, up to five days before departure, payment by bank transfer is also possible.

Do I pay for my upgrade in addition to the travel price I’ve already paid?

Yes. The upgrade surcharge will be added to the travel price already confirmed. In the booking, the full upgrade surcharge is allocated to the first passenger in the cabin/suite. The cost will not be shared amongst other passengers.

When will my credit card be charged?

The credit card provided when submitting the bid will not be charged. The credit card details are used initially to validate the bid and are not stored or retained. If your bid is accepted, payment of the upgrade surcharge will be taken from the payment method on file for the booking once the rebooking has been completed, in accordance with the payment terms set out in the terms and conditions.

What happens to the credit card details I provided for my upgrade bid?

The credit card details you provide when submitting your upgrade bid are required solely for the purpose of validating your bid. They are not stored or retained by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. If your bid is accepted, payment of the upgrade surcharge will be taken from the payment method on file for the booking once the rebooking has been completed, in accordance with the payment terms set out in the terms and conditions.

Impact of the upgrade

Will the services and amenities originally booked still be available?

The upgraded cabin/suite includes the amenities and benefits offered in the relevant new cabin/suite category.

On-board credit and other price benefits associated with the originally booked cabin/suite category will remain valid. They do not increase as a result of the upgrade and are not taken into account when calculating the upgrade bid.

Services booked independently of the cabin or suite category, such as arrival and departure packages or other additional services already booked, remain valid.

Does the booked tariff (PLATINUM, SILVER) change when upgrading?

The originally booked tariff remains unchanged. This means: SILVER remains SILVER and PLATINUM remains PLATINUM. There are currently no changes to the fare structure as part of the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Upgrade.

What happens to my travel cover if I upgrade?

If you have taken out travel insurance through Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, the sum insured will be increased by the amount of the upgrade bid. This may also lead to an increase in the insurance premium. Any increase in the insurance premium will only be charged once your upgrade offer has been accepted and the new travel confirmation/invoice has been sent.

Will I be given a new cabin/suite number after the upgrade?

Yes. If your bid is accepted, you will be allocated a new cabin/suite. The new cabin/suite number is shown on the new booking confirmation. Good to know: The location, deck, side of the ship and facilities may differ from those of the cabin or suite originally booked. The cabin or suite allocated to you may also be on a lower deck.

Will my booking number remain the same?

Yes. The booking number remains unchanged. The upgrade will be carried out as part of the existing booking.

Special booking situations

What happens if a cabin or suite is occupied by more than one person?

The upgrade offer applies to the entire cabin/suite, regardless of the number of people travelling in it. If the bid is accepted, the full amount of the bid will be added to the existing travel price. In the booking, the full upgrade surcharge is allocated to the first traveller in the cabin/suite. The cost will not be shared amongst other passengers.

If my booking includes two cabins/suites, does the upgrade apply to both of them?

No. Bookings comprising several cabins or suites are currently excluded from the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Upgrade programme. Consequently, it is not currently possible to submit an upgrade bid for such a booking. This also applies to bookings comprising several trips combined into one.

Can individual guests in a cabin or suite be upgraded, or must they all be upgraded together?

An upgrade offer always applies to the entire cabin/suite, regardless of the number of people travelling in it. It is therefore not possible to upgrade individual guests. The upgrade can only be carried out by the person who booked the trip.

What happens to my bid if the trip is rebooked or cancelled?

If a cabin/suite or the entire trip is rebooked, any upgrade bids that have already been placed will be automatically cancelled and will lapse. Whether a new upgrade bid can then be submitted depends on whether you remain eligible to participate with the new booking.

In the event of a cancellation after the bid has been accepted, the upgrade fee forms part of the travel price. In the event of a cancellation, any cancellation fees or refunds will be calculated on the basis of the increased travel price.
