Africa’s little-known animal sanctuaries 

“I knew that South Africa was breathtaking – but it was only through a journey aboard an expedition ship with Hapag-Lloyd Cruises that I realised just how much undiscovered life pulses here. I never expected to experience such close encounters with wildlife. For instance, off Hermanus, southern right whales glided past our ship just a few metres beneath me. 

On safari in South Africa’s hinterland, I felt at one with nature. Lions waited patiently in the grass, giraffes stretched their necks inquisitively, and rhinoceroses could be observed in complete tranquillity – moments of pure awe. 

Palm trees, golden beaches and the laid-back nature of the locals in the Comoros invited me to immerse myself in another world. From the moment we arrived in Madagascar, I sensed that this is a land full of surprises. From the lush northern coast to hidden bays and islands such as Nosy Hara, an entire realm of endemic wildlife and pristine nature opened up before me. Lemurs leapt playfully through the trees, and the local people welcomed us warmly, sharing their traditions and stories. Every landing was an adventure, every encounter a gift. This journey showed me that true beauty lies in the unknown.”
