Previously known by the Gallic name An Rudha (meaning “headland”), the town owes its current name to Sir William Gordon, a local landowner in the early 18th century. The town has grown since then and now has around 4,000 inhabitants. Invergordon is an important centre for the oil industry, repairing and producing equipment for the nearby oil rigs in the North Sea. Historic lighthouses are a reminder of the story of brave Grace Darling – if the weather permits a Zodiac ride, you will feel particularly close to her story: the lighthouse keeper’s daughter became a heroine in 1838 when she helped her father rescue the victims of a capsized steamship using a small rowing boat. Her spectacular feat made her a national treasure and a symbol of courage and humanity, while the islands took on a heroic aura of their own.
