    MORPHEUS

Morpheus knows the power of music that pulls you in—songs that feel like a quiet confession, wrapped in cinematic intimacy. The moniker of singer-songwriter Martijn Verhagen, Morpheus made a striking debut with his 2023 EP Morphosis, blending orchestral swells with digital beats to create a hauntingly intimate pop-noir sound. Songwriting, to him, is a form of alchemy—turning introspection into something radiant and profound.

His 2024 follow-up, The Ascent, crafted in collaboration with renowned artist and producer Thomas Azier—known for his work with Stromae and Woodkid—expanded his sonic world while staying true to its emotional core. The release was met with critical praise, earning him a cover story in L’Officiel Turkey and features in Trouw, 3voor12, and Behind the Blinds. His performances have taken him across Europe, sharing the stage with artists like Joep Beving, Thomas Azier, Ásgeir, Jay-Jay Johanson, and Kovacs. A sold-out fall tour cemented his reputation as an artist who captivates in both sound and presence, with stops at ESNS 2024 and 2025.

Now, Morpheus is deep in the creation of his debut album—an intimate and evolving project set to reveal new sides of his sound. What comes next remains wrapped in mystery, but one thing is certain: it won’t let go easily.

    Thole Rotermund Kunsthandel

Specialising in German Expressionist and Classical Modernist works on paper, Thole Rotermund Kunsthandel has been one of the leading contacts for collectors throughout Europe in this field for over 20 years. The focus is on important artists of the early 20th century: August Macke, Franz Marc, Paul Klee, Alexej von Jawlensky, Lyonel Feininger, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Emil Nolde and others. But the abstract tendencies of early post-war art, such as Ernst Wilhelm Nay and Eduard Bargheer, are also represented. Contemporary art is not normally the focus of the Hamburg paper experts, but when it comes to the passion for this special medium, extraordinary collaborations are possible. In the gallery on the EUROPA 2, Thole Rotermund Kunsthandel presents the Berlin artist and paper lover Peer Kriesel, who uses ‘designed’ print products that have become obsolete in their original form as painting surfaces for his exciting overpaintings.

  • Art Dealer

    Thole Rotermund

As a schoolboy, he met the publicist, collector and founder of the Kunsthalle Emden, Henri Nannen, who fuelled his enthusiasm for classical modern art. He went on to study art history and literature in Hamburg with study visits to San Francisco and Munich. After completing his master's degree, he joined the Berlin auction house Villa Grisebach as an expert in modern art. In 2000, Thole Rotermund finally turned his passion into a profession: he returned to Hamburg and founded an art dealership specialising in works of classical modern art. In addition to the classic art trade, as a competent consultant he not only advises established collections but also international collectors on the acquisition or sale of a work of art. Thole Rotermund Kunsthandel is represented at the leading art fairs in Cologne, Munich, Karlsruhe and Berlin. He is also a member of the board of the Federal Association of German Galleries and Art Dealers (BVDG).
