Toronto/Lake Ontario/Canada, departure 1.00 hrs
With a total area of around 244,000 km2 (94,209 mi.2), the Great Lakes dominate the North American landscape. Filled with the passionate spirit of exploration that once drew settlers to these parts, your adventures start here in Toronto. The lakes are connected by impressive locks. Your cruise will begin with these nautical masterpieces that most ships cannot navigate. Having been built as an expedition ship for such purposes, the HANSEATIC inspiration negotiates the Welland Canal with ease. Eight locks, around 20 bridges and a change in height of 100 m (328 ft): this route demands millimetre precision from the captain and crew. Watch the exciting manoeuvre from the many open deck spaces.
Windsor/Detroit River, from 7.30 to 19.00 hrs
Before you lies vast Lake Erie and the magnificent passage to the Canadian city of Windsor on the Detroit River. From the ship, you’ll have the best view of the skyline of America’s former “Motor City” on the other bank of the river. Visit Detroit* to discover the roots of American automotive history and the varied architecture of this city that is once again on the up. Follow in the footsteps of Henry Ford* at the museum that bears his name and see former masterpieces of the road and rails.
Tobermory/Lake Huron, from 13.00 to 19.00 hrs
Parry Sound, from 7.00 to 19.30 hrs
A scenic approach through a small lagoon brings you to Parry Sound, which lies in a watery labyrinth with a distinctly Scandinavian feel. The marine walking trails are a great way to explore this town named after the polar explorer William E. Parry and the nearby lake shore. The spellbinding views on a boat trip of the Thirty Thousand Islands* illustrate why the town is known as the gateway to the archipelago, as narrow channels lead past imposing limestone cliffs to hidden natural treasures. Alternatively, immerse yourself in a panoramic picture in Killbear Provincial Park*, where the pink granite banks merge with the green forest.
Killarney, from 7.00 to 14.00 hrs
Cruising on Lake Huron
The island-studded scenery around Killarney welcomes you with unspoilt nature that harks back to the time of the first trappers. The small coastal municipality is still an El Dorado for outdoor activities.
Sault Ste. Marie/Saint Marys River, from 7.00 to 12.00 hrs
To experience vibrant culture surrounded by magnificent nature, you’ll continue to Sault Ste. Marie. The city is divided not only by a river, but also by the border between Canada on one side and the USA on the other. Make the most of your time here with a walk to the historic locks or a visit to the bushplane museum.
Mackinac Island/Lake Huron/USA, from 8.00 to 19.00 hrs
Mackinac Island is a natural jewel of the Great Lakes and is one of the most beautiful islands in the USA. While Victorian villas and the Grand Hotel recall the 19th century, Fort Mackinac serves as a reminder of the American Revolutionary War. Discover the small tree-covered island independently by bicycle or with a carriage ride.
Relaxation at sea
Sturgeon Bay/Lake Michigan, from 8.00 to 17.00 hrs
The Door Peninsula is an insider’s tip on the edge of Lake Michigan. Life is closely tied to the water for the people who live here – both for leisure pursuits such as hiking or kayaking, and for work in the most famous shipbuilding centre of Door County. This symbiosis is immediately evident as you arrive in Sturgeon Bay by tender boat, where this idyllic little city welcomes you with its charm. Head out from here to discover the enchanting Door Peninsula* with its historic brick lighthouses, small fishing villages and expansive fruit and wine-growing regions.
