Ireland
(Dunmore East, Dingle, Bere Island)
Ireland – merely thinking about the Emerald Isle brings to mind pictures of its wonderful scenery. Enjoy one of these scenes on the first stage of your expedition on board the HANSEATIC nature. Surrounded by fertile meadows and situated in a small bay, the fishing village of Dunmore East greets you with typical Irish charm. Fascinating historical insights await you in nearby Waterford, which was founded by Vikings in the 9th century. Set out on a tour of discovery along the superbly preserved city walls to Reginald’s Tower, reportedly the oldest building in Ireland. Experience the region’s unspoilt nature on an idyllic scenic journey to Kilkenny*. Explore the historic centre of this medieval town and Kilkenny Castle. Alternatively, visit the multi-award-winning Mount Congreve Gardens* and take a botanical tour in autumnal surroundings. Immerse yourself in this lovingly designed oasis of hydrangeas, vetches and rhododendrons – an idyllic taster of the Dingle peninsula, where the waves have shaped a wild coast stretching out into the Atlantic like a finger. The tour of the Ring of Dingle* alternates between beaches and steep cliffs, cultural relics and spectacular views. You will never forget your hike on the Irish pilgrim route*: where pilgrims once set foot on dry land, you will head to Mount Brandon, one of Ireland’s most beautiful old pilgrim routes. Mist can descend here, cloaking the mountain in a mystical ambiance. Bere Island, a hidden gem, is a paradise for fans of Nordic landscapes. Marvel at a place that combines pristine scenery, rugged cliffs and gently rolling green hills. The island itself has plenty to offer as well: the cultural centre, the striking lighthouse and the remains of the old Viking harbour bring history to life. The HANSEATIC nature will then set a course for the Azores – spend your relaxing days at sea getting to know your new expedition ship inside and out. Listen to presentations by the experts or reflect on your experiences from the Observation Deck.
Relaxation at sea
Azores
(Graciosa, Pico , Faial, Sao Jorge , Terceira)
The vivid green of Ireland will accompany you on the next stage of your expedition to the island of Graciosa in the Azores. Find inspiration in the natural charm of the smallest of these volcanic islands. The excursion to Graciosa, the “graceful island” of small villages and volcanoes*, promises illuminating insights on the way to the mighty Calderina volcanic crater. Want to feel like a cave explorer? Then go on a hike to the Furna do Enxofre* and descend to a sulphur cave and underground crater lake. On Pico, Lajes do Pico recalls the bygone age of whaling. In addition to learning about the history of the fishing village, you will be enchanted by the island’s natural landmark: at over 2,300 m (7,545 ft), the Pico is Portugal’s highest mountain and volcano. Delve into this surreal landscape and discover the mysteries of the crater island of Pico* between bizarre, rugged rock formations and rainforest-like vegetation. Very special impressions await you when you explore Pico’s vineyards on foot*. Wander through vineyards surrounded by basalt walls, passing vines used to cultivate the famous Verdelho grape. On the island of Faial, the coastal city of Horta is a sailing mecca with yachts and the wonderful architecture of its impressive palaces and manor houses. Spend the evening in the legendary Peter Cafe Sport before setting out the next day for new discoveries on the Capelinhos volcano*. The centre of the island provides a stunning view of the bizarre scenery. A hike to the Faial Caldeira* presents equally impressive rock formations. Take a moment to soak in the spectacular panorama – for example, on Sao Jorge: on the “dragon island”, the steep green coast rises majestically out of the sea. With your experts by your side, you will explore the small town of Velas before visiting a fascinating island capital on Terceira: a city tour through Angra do Heroismo* will take you into the vibrant centre with its narrow cobbled alleys and the Cathedral of Sao Salvador da Se. Experience the imposing Monte Brasil crater and Sao Sebastiao, said to be the oldest settlement, on an island tour of Terceira*. Where the first Portuguese settlers set foot on dry land in the 15th century, you will leave the Azores knowing that you have explored one of the planet’s most remote island paradises.
