Cruising on Lake Michigan
Traverse City, from 8.00 to 19.00 hrs
Like an eighth ocean, the Great Lakes stretch across six US states, framed by magnificent natural beauty, cosy coastal towns and living cultural history. Traverse City awaits you in the western arm of Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay. In the “jewel of the north”, old Victorian houses with historic charm vie for your attention. The Sleeping Bear Dunes* are equally sensational: up to 140 m (459 ft) high, the imposing sand drifts offer a breathtaking view of Lake Michigan. Experience nature and pleasure in total harmony during a wine-tasting session on the Old Mission Peninsula – Michigan’s wine coast*.
Mackinac Island/Lake Huron, from 7.00 to 15.00 hrs
After exquisite insights into the Chateau Chantal vineyard, the peninsula’s 500,000 cherry trees create a picturesque contrast as you head for the cultural and natural riches of Lake Huron on Mackinac Island. Explore the car-free island at your own pace on a bicycle or in a horse-drawn carriage before the former Fort Mackinac provides a unique view of the island. After negotiating the Soo Lock, the next day brings you to Lake Superior.
Cruising on Lake Superior
Duluth/Lake Superior, from 7.00 to 18.00 hrs
On the shores of the world’s largest freshwater lake, Duluth greets you with Scandinavian charm. A city tour of Duluth* presents a living picture book of times gone by: visit St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center for fascinating stories of the settlers. Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse* show just what makes the region so alluring: as water cascades down the stony steps of the Gooseberry River, the lighthouse built in 1910 keeps watch from the cliff.
Thunder Bay/Lake Superior/Canada, from 9.00 to 20.00 hrs
With these impressions in your mind, you will reach Thunder Bay with its enchanting coastal landscapes and amethyst mines. A scenic journey to Ouimet Canyon and Eagle Canyon* shows you how the waters once channelled 150 m (492 ft) down into the rock. Watch water’s elemental force at work in the “Niagara Falls of the north” on an excursion to historic Fort William and Kakabeka Falls*: the water plunges nearly 40 m (131 ft) into the Kaministiquia River – an amazing natural spectacle. A scenic flight over Thunder Bay* indicates the scale of this magnificent landscape. As you bid farewell to the seemingly endless lake, the wild coast and the outlying islands, they will show you their most beautiful side.
Cruising on Lake SuperiorSault Ste. Marie, arrival 22.00 hrs
Sault Ste. Marie, departure 18.30 hrs
In Sault Ste. Marie, stars and stripes meet the maple leaf: a bridge connects the city’s American and Canadian sides, and you can explore the buildings dating back to the early 19th century in depth. Untouched wilderness greets you on the scenic journey/train ride to Agawa Canyon*: the dense green of the forests stretches as far as the eye can see, carpeting the mountains. Experience the fascination of flight in the heritage centre flight simulator on a city tour with a visit to the Bushplane Museum*.
Little Current/Lake Huron, from 8.00 to 19.00 hrs
Back on the ground on Manitoulin Island, the sailing town of Little Current exudes maritime charm with its rows of white boats. Be impressed by the tradition and culture of the Ojibwe at a powwow in M’Chigeeng*: adorned with feather headdresses and war paint, the indigenous people dance to the sound of drums. Celebrate another moving ritual with a local guide on a hike on the Cup and Saucer Trail*.
Parry Sound, from 7.00 to 21.00 hrs
There are many unforgettable moments that make the region around Parry Sound so alluring – whether cruising on a boat trip to the 30,000 islands* or taking a scenic flight over the 30,000 islands*.
Tobermory, from 7.00 to 14.00 hrs Cruising on Lake Huron
In a small bay on Lake Huron lies the fishing village of Tobermory. Reflecting this tranquil idyll, shops around the picturesque harbour invite you to while away the time, and a glass-bottom boat offers an unusual perspective of the lake landscape.
Windsor/Detroit River, from 8.00 to 19.00 hrs
Enjoy fascinating insights into the economic rise of Windsor at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village* in Detroit. The legacy of America’s automotive history is just as engrossing as the restored buildings from the 18th to 20th century. A magnificent manor house awaits you on an excursion to Windsor and Willistead Manor*. The stylish atmosphere of this Tudor-style house will transport you back through its over 100 years of history.
