Reykjavik/Iceland, departure 19.00 hrs
Iceland (Olafsvik , cruising off Latrabjarg, Grimsey Akureyri)
In Iceland, where impressive natural spectacles allow you to experience the wonder of creation, humans are just the supporting cast. This is strikingly underlined as soon as you reach Olafsvik. Take a trip to Snaefellsjoekull* and marvel at this 1,500 m (4,921 ft) high volcano blanketed by ice and snow. On a tour of the Snaefellsnes peninsula*, uncover the secrets of the beautiful and dramatic landscape. Discover Iceland’s bird life when cruising off Latrabjarg – home to thousands of puffins, guillemots and auks. The island of Grimsey, with its amazing basalt columns, is a real gem of the Arctic Circle and not just for ornithologists. At the end of Eyjafjoerdur lies the district capital of Akureyri – the starting point for your unforgettable trip to see the Godafoss waterfall and Midge Lake*. The heathens are said to have consigned their pagan idols to the thundering Godafoss during the process of Christianisation. Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature on a flight over the volcanic landscape*. Soar over the “desert of crimes”, caldera and the turquoise crater lake or go riding on Icelandic horses*.
Relaxation at sea
Norway’s fjords (Sunnylvenfjord, Geirangerfjord)
The wild kingdom of the Vikings and the unique grandeur of its natural beauty await you in Norway. The waterfall in Hellesylt in Sunnylvenfjord – the starting point of your expedition to the fjords, mountains and glaciers on the way to Geiranger* – will get you in the mood for the days to come. The Geirangerfjord is like a gigantic amphitheatre of snow-capped peaks, high fjord walls and thundering waterfalls. The journey to one of the summits at about 1,500 m (4,921 ft) is also outstanding: Dalsnibba* will reward you with a sensationally clear view. You can enjoy a completely different perspective on a kayak tour on the Geirangerfjord*.
Lofoten (Reine , Leknes, cruising in the Trollfjord, Svolvaer )
Even further north, the Lofoten Islands attractively set the scene off the coast of Norway. The village of Reine, which has been named the most beautiful place in Norway, promises wonderful Nordic flair. Fishing is a long-standing tradition here, as shown by the “stockfish archipelago”, to the south of Lofoten*, where you can uncover the secrets of “Toerrfisk”. On a boat trip and hike to Bunes*, follow old fishermen’s paths to the picturesque sandy beach. Deepen your insights into this island realm from the small town of Leknes. On the island of Flakstadoya, you can learn some interesting facts about the crafts and history of the Lofoten Islands*. Discover nature and the elements in a more active way on a hike in the valley of Tjoerndalen* and enjoy some magnificent panoramic views or go on a deep-sea fishing trip in the Lofoten waters*. Cruising in the Trollfjord, whose mouth is just 100 m (328 ft) wide, is a spectacular experience. This is where the mythical creatures from Norwegian mythology are said to come from. Svolvaer, the capital and economic hub of the Lofoten Islands, will welcome you with a wealth of new impressions. Many artists have settled in this remote region, as you will see on a visit to Henningsvaer with the Lofoten Hus art gallery*, built on countless tiny islands and skerries.
Cruising off North Cape Honningsvag
Your route takes you through the fjords to Honningsvag to reach the northernmost point of the European mainland. The transfer to North Cape* and the previous cruising will get you in the mood for the icy world of Spitsbergen.
Spitsbergen (including Hornsund, Ny-Alesund, Moellerhafen, Raudfjord, Liefdefjord, Magdalenefjord, Isfjord)
Here, your route will be determined each day by the weather and ice. The backdrop is provided by glaciers the size of houses and striking mountain ranges such as those in Hornsund. Feel a sense of the true pioneering spirit in Ny-Alesund, an Arctic research centre from which Amundsen and Nobile set off in 1926 to become the first people to reach the North Pole. Great expanses, tranquillity and magnificent panoramic views ensure a real expedition feeling that is enhanced still further in the Lilliehoekfjord or in the bay of Moellerhafen and reaches its peak in Raudfjord, with its majestic mountain backdrops. With a little luck, you will also see seals and whales in the Liefdefjord, but only if you can tear your eyes away from the overwhelming Monaco Glacier. Dazzling worlds of ice that also define the Magdalenefjord and the Isfjord. What more can an explorer’s heart desire? This Nordic expedition brings together everything that lovers of nature and animals could hope for.
