At just 3.5 km2, Delos is one of the smallest islands in the Aegean Sea. It was a thriving place in ancient times and a sacred site to the Greeks due to the temple located there that was dedicated to Apollo. Nowadays it is a bare rocky island composed of granite and gneiss with just the traces and remains of the former magnificent sanctuaries and cultural sites still showing. It is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The island has remained effectively unoccupied since the Middle Ages. This is the state in which it is still found today ? only the museum attendants and archaeologists are a permanent fixture on Delos.
