Adventure in Spitsbergen: highlights and circumnavigation depending on the conditions (including Ny-Alesund, Moellerhafen, Magdalenefjord, Raudfjord, Liefdefjord, Mushamna, Moffen, cruising through the Hinlopen Strait, Alkefjellet, Nordaustlandet, cruising through Freeman Sound, Cape Lee, Hornsund)
When the Dutch seafarer Willem Barents set out in 1596 to find a north-east passage from Europe to Asia, he discovered an ice-covered archipelago. Fascinated by the peaked mountains climbing up to 1,700 m (5,577 ft), he named the archipelago after them. More than 400 years later, your expedition will show you the fascination that Spitsbergen inspires. As a result of our extensive experience, we have allocated generous amounts of time to this exciting circumnavigation with the BREMEN. The midnight sun makes this magical world seem even more glorious. Experience the most beautiful fjords and bays thanks to the captain and officers’ comprehensive knowledge of the Arctic – only a ship like the BREMEN makes this possible. Small, manoeuvrable, with a shallow draught and the highest ice class for passenger ships: together with the Zodiacs, it guarantees unforgettable moments in nautically demanding waters. Numerous activities and landings are on the agenda. The first destination is Ny-Alesund, where the spirit of adventure and discovery will come alive. You’ll set foot on historic soil and the present territory of researchers in one of the northernmost settlements in the world. In 1926, it was the starting point for the airship Norge, in which the polar explorer Roald Amundsen and airship pioneer Umberto Nobile became the first people to reach the North Pole. Today, a few researchers live here and study climate change and its effects on the flora and fauna. Expeditionary spirit past and present exist in close harmony when the BREMEN reaches Moellerhafen. Here you can visit the northernmost bar in the world, “Lloyd’s Hotel”, a refuge set up for Arctic explorers. Time and again you will feel the power and sensitivity of a raw natural beauty – right through to the bright summer nights. In Magdalenefjord too, the end of numerous glaciers which you will cruise past on the BREMEN. Marvel at the interplay of colours on the Raudfjord and observe the breathtaking calving of the of the majestic, shimmering blue Monaco Glacier in the Liefdefjord. Enjoy these natural spectacles as your ship forges a path through the drifting ice floes, and keep an eye out for whales and seals. Again and again, the Zodiacs will take you up-close.
Protected fjords and ice floes: the hunting grounds of the polar bear. There is a good chance of spotting the Ursus maritimus during your Spitsbergen adventure. If there’s a call of “Polar bear spotted!”, the crew is able to react spontaneously to ensure some unforgettable discoveries. Spitsbergen provides a habitat and protection to a great number of species. Mushamna, for example, is a breeding ground for Arctic terns and eider ducks – and you might spot Arctic foxes hunting for food. Off the small island of Moffen, marvel at impressive walruses, which often gather on the even coast. The BREMEN is always on the lookout for one-of-a-kind sights like this. To do so, the ship makes use of its highest ice class and forges its path with certainty – such as the cruise through the Hinlopen Strait, with a view of Hinlopenbreen, the largest outlet glacier in Spitsbergen at over 70 km (43 mi.) long. The Alkefjellet will really ignite your pioneering spirit. Thick-billed murres, kittiwakes and glaucous gulls inhabit the cliffs of “bird mountain” in their thousands. The excitement will grow as a special adventure approaches: will you join the small group of explorers who press on to Nordaustlandet? This uninhabited island, the second largest in the north-east of the Spitsbergen archipelago, boasts an atmospheric landscape thanks to its vast expanses of flatness and ice caps. Depending on the ice conditions, the Zodiacs will be deployed here, too. There’s no greater sense of being part of a real expedition than when you are exploring the numerous bays and the course is suddenly changed to provide the best spots for viewing animals and the scenery. The journey itself becomes the destination, and the BREMEN meets the nautical challenges. If the ice conditions allow, you will cruise through the narrow Freeman Sound – accompanied by the fascinating play of colour and light on the landscape. With a little luck, you can enjoy particularly weighty observations from the Zodiacs off Cape Lee, the original territory of the walruses. These impressions can only be outdone by the whales which happily follow ships in these waters from time to time. In Hornsund, the glaciers’ tongues of ice round off your expedition in style. Here you will know whether you have become one of the few people to circumnavigate Spitsbergen. Adventure calls!
