Chukotka/Russia (Provideniya, Zaliv Kresta , Gavriila Bay )
Even for an experienced researcher, Chukotka is mainly just a white spot on a map. It is the perfect place to explore this remote habitat with the BREMEN and its Zodiacs. The whale, seabird and seal population is as vast as the human population is small. You will get some insights into what life is like in the far north-east of Russian in the seldom-visited Provideniya. The first of many natural discoveries then awaits you in Zaliv Kresta, which will be visited by the BREMEN for the very first time. In the large bay, the Zodiacs are in their element, both as a means of transport and as an observation platform – from which you may even see some bears. You can find out how important the reindeer are to the inhabitants, both culturally and economically, in a small herding settlement. By contrast, the beauty of the grassy tundra needs no explanation as you make your way through the grassland after landing in Gavriila Bay.
Kamchatka (including Dezhnev Bay , Tintikun Lagoon , Verkhoturova , Bering Island , Zhupanova River , two days in Petropavlovsk)
Mighty volcanoes, deep fjords and crystal-clear rivers: you will be fascinated by the vast expanse and pristine beauty of Kamchatka. In the kingdom of the sea eagle, the flexibility, experience and pioneering spirit of our crew is crucial when it comes to finding the best places to observe nature and animals. The battles for dominance between powerful walruses are an impressive sight, which, with a little luck, you may see in Dezhnev Bay, for example. By contrast, the impressive fjord landscapes are completely peaceful. As is Tintikun Lagoon, with its wide, overgrown banks surrounded by rolling hills. Verkhoturova, home to auks, gulls and cormorants, is a small piece of heaven for ornithologists. Time and again, whales and sea lions may emerge during your cruise. The village of Nikolskoje on Bering Island was founded by fur traders in 1826. Our experts will tell you all about the island, past and present. The challenges faced on the expeditions of Vitus Bering will be brought to life, as you stand before the famous explorer’s grave after landing in Komandor Bay. The Zodiacs will also turn the Zhupanova River into pioneer territory in the home of the Steller’s sea eagle. To get a bird’s-eye view of the beauty of nature and the display of sulphur springs and columns of water, start out from Petropavlovsk on a helicopter flight to the Valley of the Geysers*. A bizarre landscape, which was formed 20,000 years ago. Even the flight to Nalychevo Nature Park* promises breathtaking panoramas and will make bathing in the hot springs an irresistible prospect. Alternatively, a challenging hike up Avacha volcano* will reward you with incredible views.
Kuril Islands (including Shumshu, Atlasova, Yankicho (Ushishir))
Overgrown volcanic peaks shimmer through the mist and the spray thunders against steep cliffs: the Kuril Islands remain a primeval expedition region which you can explore intensively on numerous Zodiac rides and landings. Enjoy overwhelming natural spectacles and exciting animal observations – including sea otters in the kelp forests off the island of Shumshu. The ancient forces that once created this landscape of contrasts lend significance to the volcano Alaid on Atlasova. At over 2,000 m (6,500 ft) in height, it is the highest in the Kuril Islands. On Yankicho (Ushishir), you can explore the depths of the caldera in the Zodiacs if the weather is good. Perhaps it will even be possible to walk along the edge of the crater and see the lake inside and the island’s many birds.
Sakhalin (Tyuleniy , Korsakov)
The island of Tyuleniy off Sakhalin is important for species conservation. The Zodiacs will take you to beaches, which are home to large numbers of Stellar sea lions and northern fur seals, whilst countless seabirds inhabit the cliffs. Korsakov is steeped in history: Russia used to maintain a large penal colony here, which gained literary notoriety thanks to Anton Chekhov.
