    Relaxation at sea
    Ilha Deserta Grande/Portugal

A special highlight awaits you right from the start as the Bremen heads for the tiny island of Ilha Deserta Grande – a remote part of the Madeira archipelago and an uninhabited nature reserve, which is home to rare Mediterranean monk seals. If the local authorities give us the green light, the Zodiacs will bring you ashore and let you experience an idyll that is otherwise inaccessible to most people.

    Tuesday, 22.05.2018 to
    Wednesday, 23.05.2018

    Madeira (Funchal, Porto Santo)

The main island of Madeira also welcomes you with fabulous flora and fauna. Your visit begins in the “amphitheatre” of Funchal, with its magnificent harbour surrounded by mountains. The BREMEN will stay here until late in the evening, allowing you to enjoy the southern way of life in peace, following a tour of Funchal by tukxi.* The Levada hike* takes you through charming natural scenery as you follow the famous stone irrigation system. The all-terrain vehicle tour* is no less impressive, taking you past mountain villages into the rugged hinterland. Afterwards you can enjoy a hidden gem – with fine light sand instead of dark and volcanic. As you discover Porto Santo, the “holy island”*, enjoy its beauty and the fantastic views on an Atlantic island hike* around the steep Pico Castelo.

    Santa Maria/Azores

The first thing Columbus is said to have done when he reached the Azores after returning from America is say a prayer of thanks. This is quite understandable, since powerful forces of nature have created a heavenly landscape here. On a flexible course to explore the most fascinating features of unspoilt destinations, the BREMEN is in its element. A dream destination for hiking and whale watching. The multifaceted beauty of the Azores is first revealed in Santa Maria, the island in the archipelago with the earliest inhabitants. In addition to picturesque sandy beaches and whitewashed houses, it is the small farming communities that will enchant you on a hike to the Pedreira do Campo stone quarry*.

    Saturday, 26.05.2018 to
    Tuesday, 29.05.2018

Central Azores (Terceira, Pico , Faial, Sao Jorge )

Angra do Heroismo on Terceira looks back over a rich history. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it was one of the most important supply ports of the Portuguese and Spanish; today it is a lively and colourful island capital. A walking tour takes you through the historic centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Angra do Heroismo*. The rich Renaissance style gives a hint as to why people here defended themselves with numerous fortifications against privateers such as Francis Drake. The Terceira island tour* will reveal the island’s volcanic side with the 205 m (672 ft) high crater of Monte Brasil.

Volcanoes, wine and whaling history: a scenic journey across the crater island of Pico*, with Portugal’s highest mountain, shows you the wilder side of the Azores. With enriching presentations from your experts on board, you will delve deep into the world of the marine mammals on a whale-and-dolphin-watching trip*. High numbers are expected in spring, so with luck you will also be able to see these animals from the deck of the BREMEN. Faial is known for its cosmopolitan flair, partly because of Peter Cafe Sport in the harbour of Horta. A coffee shop and taverna in one, this is an all-year-round meeting point for sailors from all over the world. Take in this legend and the attractive old town with its palaces, manor houses and churches. The BREMEN will stay overnight here so you can have a relaxing evening. The next day, share the passion of volcanologists on a hike around the Faial Caldera*. Your route will also take in Sao Jorge, which is also known as “dragon island” thanks to its strange, stretched out shape. Particularly stunning are the many lush, green stretches of land formed by cooled lava, where tropical fruits and coffee are cultivated. You can taste these on a hike to Faja dos Vimes* along the steep coastline or on an excursion with Fajas and coffee tasting*. Plenty of interesting insights into Atlantic environments, which will find fertile ground with nature enthusiasts. You will be able to harvest the “fruits” of your discoveries in the form of very special memories.
