The unknown land of the Chukchi
The Chukchi Peninsula is the natural habitat of whales, sea birds, walruses and seals. For the nimble BREMEN and its Zodiacs, the peninsula is the perfect impressive prelude to your expedition. The inhabitants here traditionally survive by fishing, hunting and breeding reindeer. The seldom-visited settlement of Provideniya will grant insights into this way of life. The first of many Zodiac rides and landings on this cruise will take you to Achen Lagoon to walk through the tundra, where you might spot the first of many bear tracks. Keep an eye out for whales, as the giants of the oceans can surface at any time, even on the way to Preobrazhenya Bay. Now your adventure is truly under way.
Kamchatka (including Anastasia Bay , Bogoslof Island , Verkhoturova , Bering , Morzovaya Bay , Petropavlovsk)
Fire and fascination in Kamchatka
Volcanoes and geysers, cliffs and dense forests: Kamchatka is simply overwhelming. It is the kingdom of the Steller’s sea eagle and features crystal-clear rivers in which brown bears hunt for food. Here, the flexibility, experience and pioneering spirit of our crew will combine to provide the best spots for viewing animals and the scenery – for example in Anastasia Bay, where the landscape glows in the most beautiful autumn colours when the weather is good. Dive straight into the experience – for example on a Zodiac ride to the bird-inhabited cliffs of Bogoslof Island, home to horned puffins, tufted puffins, thick-billed murres and common murres. With luck you might spot whales off Verkhoturova, whilst the beach is regularly frequented by walruses. During a landing in Komandor Bay on Bering in the Zodiacs, you can visit the grave of the famous explorer and discover the local culture in the typical village of Nikolskoje. In Morzovaya Bay, you have a good chance of spotting brown bears, seals and even Steller’s sea eagles. Set off from Petropavlovsk on a helicopter trip to the Valley of Geysers*, which formed 20,000 years ago and which will take your breath away with its fountains of water and steam in a bizarre landscape, to marvel at the indescribable spectacle of smoking sulphur springs and water columns from the perspective of the Steller’s sea eagle. Even the flight to Nalychevo Nature Park* promises breathtaking panoramas and will make bathing in the hot springs an irresistible prospect. Alternatively, a challenging hike up Avacha volcano* will reward you with fantastic views.
Kuril Islands (including Shumshu , Atlasova , Matua , Yankicho , Urup )
Pristine nature in faraway Asia
Overgrown volcanic cones shimmer through the mist and the spray thunders against steep cliffs: The Kuril Islands remain a primeval expedition region which you can explore intensively on numerous Zodiac rides and landings. Enjoy overwhelming natural spectacles and exciting animal observations – including sea otters in the kelp forests off the island of Shumshu. The ancient forces that once created this landscape of contrasts lend significance to the volcano Alaid on Atlasova. At over 2,000 m in height, it is the highest in the Kuril Islands. Matua, home to massive alder forests, is dominated by one of the most active volcanoes. You can press on in the Zodiacs to the heart of a steep caldera on Yankicho if the weather is good. Nature has also outdone itself on Urup, with Mount Wyssokaja towering at over 1,400 m in height. The island of Sakhalin is another highlight in the Sea of Okhotsk.
Sakhalin (Tyuleniy , Korsakov)
Off the east coast, land on the island of Tyuleniy in the Zodiacs. Its beaches are home to huge colonies of seals and Steller sea lions, and its jagged cliffs are populated by innumerable common murres. Korsakov is steeped in history: Russia used to maintain a large penal colony here which gained literary notoriety thanks to Anton Chekhov.
Relaxation at sea
Japan (Aomori, Sado )
Japan is home to exciting contrasts: the bustling prefecture of Aomori and the tranquil island of Sado will welcome you to the land of smiles, home to the Buddha and idyllic natural surroundings. A diverse conclusion to this unique expedition on the BREMEN.
