Commitment to the protection of nature

Environmental management

Commitment to nature conservation

Our cruises have a tradition dating back more than 100 years. Experiencing the fascination of unique destination areas such as the Arctic or Antarctic, encountering the biological diversity of bizarre worlds of ice — these are the experiences which defy description. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is committed to maintaining these highly sensitive ecological systems in their pristine condition for coming generations as well.
Environmental management

The possibilities of acting in an environmentally-friendly way within the scope of touristic activities are many and diverse: thus, for example, the ships used by Hapag-Lloyd are fitted with state-of-the-art environmental technology. The sewage is treated biologically and rubbish is disposed of in an environmentally-friendly way in the ship's own incineration facilities. In the regions of the Arctic and the Antarctic we use diesel oil instead of heavy oil. We also come clean in the case of the new, non-toxic underwater paint.

The landings in the Antarctic always take place in small groups and under the supervision of experienced expedition leaders and lectors, who already point out the special features of the respective areas to be visited and urge people to adhere to the rules and regulations accordingly.

As a member of IAATO (International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators), Hapag-Lloyd Cruises carries out all trips to these destinations in compliance with the agreed code of conduct, which you can read on this page.
Environmental management
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is also co-founder of the AECO (Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators), which stipulates the same environmental protection guidelines for the Arctic as the IAATO does for the Antarctic. Our environmental officer Ms Schultzen is actively involved in promoting the environmental protection of the Arctic and the Antarctic. Needless to say, our efforts to make travelling environmentally compatible rely on the active cooperation and support of our passengers. This is something for which we would like to thank you in advance. Together, let us ensure that these unparalleled ecological systems are preserved and continue to be what makes them so precious for us humans – untouched sanctuaries of a unique nature.
