Spitsbergen,
Landings dependent on weather and ice, e.g. at Ny-Alesund, Moellerhafen, Monaco Glacier,
Moffen, Magdalenefjord, Barentsburg, Pyramiden, Longyearbyen
Spitsbergen/Norway
Svalbardi fundinn – or “Cold coast found” – is what the Vikings called as they disembarked on this mountainous island. You can look forward to some exciting sights and landings with an expeditionary spirit as the EUROPA cruises off the west coast in the light of the midnight sun. At the beginning of the 20th century, Amundsen set out from the little village of Ny-Alesund on his expedition to the North Pole. See the historic evidence for yourself in the village museum or send a postcard to your loved ones from the world’s northernmost post office. The next few days will be completely devoted to discovering Spitsbergen’s natural beauty. The mighty Monaco Glacier carves its way through the Liefdefjord and is a great place for a walk on the shimmering icy surface. With a bit of luck, you might hear cries of “walruses ahead” off the tiny island of Moffen and you may be able to glimpse some polar bears against the backdrop of the Magdalenefjord. Cruise past Barentsburg and Pyramiden, both of which are former Russian mining communities, before you explore Svalbard’s capital Longyearbyen at your own pace. The next morning, it is time to leave Spitsbergen, passing Bear Island where you can hear the calls of common murres, puffins and northern fulmars nesting on the steep cliffs.
