Callao is Peru’s biggest harbour and close to the capital, Lima. Despite chaotic traffic conditions, a constant grey mist that the locals call “garua”, and the rapidly growing shanty towns – formerly known as “barriadas” and today called “pueblos jovenes” – numerous historic sights dating from the colonial era and impressive collections of Peruvian art offer visitors a wealth of interesting impressions.

Chile’s island worlds (Isla Pan de Azucar, cruising off Isla Chanaral, Isla Damas)
The protected Isla Pan de Azucar is a miniature paradise. From the Zodiac, watch pelicans, sea lions and maybe even Humboldt penguins in their natural habitat. Keep an eye out for seals and other sea birds from the deck of the HANSEATIC as you cruise off Isla Chanaral. Find out more about their way of life on a Zodiac landing on the smaller Isla Damas (subject to official approval).

Valparaiso, arrival 16.00 hrs
The cultural capital of Valparaiso reflects the vibrant lives of Chile’s human inhabitants. From here, you can explore Santiago de Chile*, a melting pot of cultures. Alternatively, marvel at the centuries-old palm forests on a hike in La Campana National Park*. Charles Darwin once climbed to the peak of La Campana, over 1,800 m (5,905 ft) high, and became the first person to describe the native animal and plant life. Explore every facet of the Chilean lifestyle on a journey through Valparaiso and Vina del Mar*.

Isla de Chiloe
Wonderful bays where sea lions can sometimes be found soaking up the sun on the beach: in addition to its natural beauty, Isla de Chiloe is also famous for the living mythology of its indigenous people, the Huilliche. Follow in their footsteps and discover relics from colonial times in Chiloe’s villages*. The tour to penguin watching on the island of Punihuil* takes you right into the home of flightless sea birds – the only place in the world where Humboldt and Magellanic penguins breed right next to each other.

Chile’s southern fjords (passing the Pio XI Glacier, intensive cruising in the Chilean fjords, Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas, sailing through the Strait of Magellan, passing the Garibaldi Glacier, sailing through the Beagle Channel)
One highlight of your Patagonian impressions will be the Pio XI Glacier, one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. Enjoy impressive views of the blue-white foot of the glacier, which is several kilometres wide. The eventful course through the Chilean fjords will also be determined by the power of creation. In the labyrinth of channels and islands, the HANSEATIC takes full advantage of its status as a small, manoeuvrable expedition ship. The ship will take plenty of time to explore them – for example, when cruising through the Conception, Inocentes and Sarmiento channels. You will then reach Puerto Natales, the region’s capital and your starting point for exploring Torres del Paine National Park*, where aquamarine mountain lakes, waterfalls and expansive forests shape the picturesque landscape. The three needle-like granite mountains tower around 3,000 m (9,842 ft) overhead. Enjoy equally breathtaking panoramas in the narrow straits of water – for example, the Kirke and Smyth channels. A pure expedition feeling will accompany you throughout and become even more intense in Punta Arenas. Marvel at the flora and fauna of southern Chile from a very special perspective on a hike through Magallanes National Reserve* or a kayak tour of the Strait of Magellan*. The HANSEATIC travels through the Strait of Magellan in the spirit of the first person to circumnavigate the globe. In the unforgettable Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego will fire up your imagination when the impressive Garibaldi Glacier rises up before you. The view of the mighty glacier ridge when cruising in the sound will stay with you for a long time, as will many other impressions on this special expedition.
