Java: Between Colonial and Cultural Heritage
Coffee, sugar, tobacco and rubber – when it comes to exporting Java’s local treasures, the port of Semarang is extremely important. With its fascinating mix of colonial heritage and Javanese culture, it is also the starting point for your intensive exploration of the idyllic countryside. Your thirst for discovery will take you to fertile soil here. As you pass coffee, cocoa and fruit plantations and rice fields, you will be approaching enlightenment: Borobudur Temple* is one of the largest Buddhist sites in the world, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Probably built in 750 AD during the reign of the Sailendra Dynasty, it was not uncovered from layers of volcanic ash until 1835. Explore the religious heritage of Java on the hill of the 1,000 Buddhas.

Kuching/Borneo/Sarawak/Malaysia

Malaysia: A Cultural Trail Through the Home of the Orang-Utans
Breathtaking moments await as you encounter the “forest people”, which is how their name translates. From Kuching, which was once the capital of the White Rajah, the excursion takes you to see the long houses and orang-utans* in the tracks of this endangered species. In the Semongoh Wildlife Centre, orphaned apes are rehabilitated to life in the wild. Get an intensive insight into the surrounding flora and fauna on a nature hike in Bako National Park*. Open boats will take you to the island with its various zones of vegetation – from the craggy coastline to mangrove forests, lowland rainforests and swamps.

From Bintulu, an excursion will take you to visit the Niah Caves of Sarawak*, the site of the oldest recorded human settlement in eastern Malaysia. One thing that is timeless is the beauty of the rainforest, which you can enjoy on a countryside tour before joining the ship again in Miri.

The port of Muara is the gateway to the Sultanate of Brunei which, going by average income, is one of the richest countries in the world. If weather conditions are favourable, take a boat trip through the Temburong region*, one of the oldest rainforests on earth. Find out what river life is like in a water taxi and a traditional long boat. Explorers will also enjoy discovering the capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan, with a boat trip to the water village*. Approximately 3,000 buildings on stilts – including schools, mosques and shops – are home to some 30,000 people. Your excursion will also take in the Brunei museum and a mangrove boat trip*. A natural paradise, where with luck you will see proboscis monkeys and exotic species of birds in their natural habitats.
