Falkland Islands

Dream Destination for Bird Enthusiasts: The Falkland Islands
Step into the Zodiacs of the HANSEATIC and encounter a fascinating, species-rich bird world at close proximity. Following several flexible landings, you will experience this unique ecosystem very intensively when, together with the experts, you watch rockhopper and Magellanic penguins which share their habitat with kelp geese, black-browed albatrosses and steamer ducks. By contrast, the small capital Stanley is perceived as “very British“. Discover Victorian houses and the southernmost Anglican church in the world.

Unforgettable Encounters in South Georgia
Three expedition days full of magnificent experiences lie ahead of you when glaciated peaks on the horizon announce this unique animal paradise. Hundreds of thousands of king penguins populate the coasts and slopes of the island and bring life to the overwhelming landscape. In the context of up to three rides and landings with the Zodiacs per day you will get truly close to the rich animal world and can discover elephant seals fighting over a harem or watch gentoo and thousands of king penguins incubating their eggs or raising their young. Outstanding experts with extensive experiences in Antarctica make you familiar with the fauna and flora. In Grytviken, you can immerse yourself in the enthralling history of polar research – visit the little whalers’ church built in 1913 and the grave of the polar researcher Sir Ernest Shackleton whose legendary “Endurance“ expedition came to a happy end on South Georgia.

South Orkney Islands , Weddell Sea, South Shetland Islands , Antarctic Peninsula

You can gain an impression of the everyday life of modern polar researchers when, weather permitting, you visit the Argentinian research station Orcadas on the South Orkney Islands with the Zodiacs (subject to approval). And with a little luck, you will spot majestic icebergs for the first time off the coast of Signy Island.

Captivating Moments in the Ice: South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula
Where the weather and ice determine the route, only a genuine expedition ship guarantees the full Antarctic experience – small, manoeuvrable and, thanks to the highest ice class for passenger ships, even capable of sailing through drift and pack ice. Relentlessly, the ship makes its way towards the Antarctic Peninsula. You will experience magic moments, for instance when the Zodiacs take you close to thousands of Adelie penguins on Paulet Island in the Weddell Sea. Or while cruising in the Antarctic Sound, when gigantic table icebergs silently drift through the waters. Every day on board is characterised by the spirit of courageous pioneers like Otto Nordenskjöld, who once explored this remote region under great hardship. With their many years of experience in the polar regions of this world, the captain, crew and the versed experts from various fields of expertise facilitate expedition experiences you will never forget. On the black lava beaches of Deception Island, for example, you can take a bath in hot springs. Or marvel at the miracles of Paradise Bay – the Zodiacs will take you past glistening icebergs to majestically tall glacier towers with bright blue crevices. If the ice and weather conditions allow for a landing, you will set foot on the Antarctic mainland – a particularly elevating moment of your expedition. Further south, the passage through the Neumayer Channel reveals to you fantastic glacier panoramas which continue in the narrow Lemaire Channel - spectacular peaks on either side make this waterway one of the most beautiful ship passages in the world. In the Penola Strait, the excitement on board rises once again – how far south will the HANSEATIC be able to advance? A question which can only be answered on board. What is certain, however, is that you will enjoy the immense beauty of this Antarctic world of wonders following the last landings with the Zodiacs. Between icebergs and large colonies of Adelie and chinstrap penguins, it is easy to be amazed – and all the more difficult to say farewell.
