Portsmouth/England, 11.00 – 18.00 hrs
Magical natural surroundings under the crown of England
Experience fascinating facets of Europe on a cruise offering a variety of excursions and numerous opportunities for individual activities. A mystical atmosphere envelops you near Portsmouth when you puzzle over the prehistoric stone circles of Stonehenge*. Created by druids? Intended to calculate the lunar orbit? Winchester Castle also exerts a timeless magic. In the Great Hall, the legend of King Arthur’s Round Table is brought to life. Historic Winchester and its cathedral*, the longest in Europe, bear evidence of the time when this was the capital city of England.
Sun, 16.10.2016
Falmouth, 7.00 – 14.00 hrs
The county of Cornwall is a kingdom for nature lovers. The natural harbour of Falmouth becomes the gateway to a landscape that has the mild Gulf Stream to thank for its almost Mediterranean flora. Against the stunning backdrop of southern England, medieval St Michael’s Mount and Land’s End*, England’s westernmost point, will prove enchanting. Rugged cliffs, typical cottages and colourful fishing boats round off your hike to the Lizard Peninsula*.
Mon, 17.10.2016
Lorient/France, 9.00 – 19.00 hrs
The name Lorient comes from L’Orient (The Orient) because this is where the operative base of the French East India Company was located. Today, Lorient is the starting point for exploring the diverse area of Brittany. Such as a visit to the mighty Carnac megaliths*, which bear witness to a fascinating early history. Concarneau and Pont-Aven* are a very different source of inspiration: first, a town centre awaits you, enclosed by imposing walls and exuding medieval flair; next is a small town nestled in the estuary of the Aven and made famous by the art school once attended by Gauguin. Pure poetry – and not without reason the setting for the crime novel Death in Pont-Aven by Jean-Luc Bannalec, a long-time bestseller. Particularly multifaceted is Quimper – a capital of art, history and legends*. A walk through the alleyways lined with half-timbered houses will turn into a journey through architectural eras.

La Pallice (La Rochelle), 9.00 – 22.00 hrs
Vibrant, cosmopolitan and equally picturesque is La Rochelle, which not only offers links to the past, but also France’s newest university and the biggest marina on Europe’s Atlantic coast. During a walking tour of the old town*, it is also worth turning your gaze skyward every now and again: many of the facades are decorated with gargoyles and stone heads. A few kilometres away is the charming Ile de Re* with wide sandy beaches and picturesque fishing villages. Since 1988, it has been connected to the mainland by means of a spectacular bridge. The island is home to many artists who find inspiration in the beauty of the scenery. An idyllic spot you cannot fail to fall in love with and that is also perfect for exploring on a bicycle tour of the Ile de Re*.

Journey to the Gironde
Enjoy a box seat with a view of the wine-growing region of Medoc on board the BREMEN on a journey to the Gironde. Famous Bordeaux is perfectly situated for winemakers. The impressions you will gain of Bordeaux – with a panoramic trip and visit to a winery* – are a true pleasure. Sample the wonderful landscape on a bicycle tour through the vineyards*. A city tour of Saint-Emilion* has just as much character as the region’s wine. The medieval UNESCO World Heritage Site is shaped by the Gothic clock tower of the monolithic church.
Thu, 20.10.2016
St.-Jean-de-Luz, 14.00 – 19.00 hrs
But what would the Atlantic coast be without its sophisticated beach resorts? By the time you are strolling past the colourful beach villas, the BREMEN will have introduced you to the magnificent views of St.-Jean-de-Luz. The queen of the sea resorts, Biarritz*, requests an audience on a panoramic trip to La Grande Plage and the impressive Hotel du Palais. You will feel like a god in France on a hike through the Basque country*. Between the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Sea, you will see why the Basque people’s love for their green region knows no bounds.
Fri, 21.10.2016
Santander/Spain, 8.00 – 18.00 hrs
The beauty of the Basque country is demonstrated by rugged cliffs and fine, sandy beaches. The old town of Santander nestles harmoniously with the steep slopes right by the sea. Bilbao, the city of architecture, and the Guggenheim Museum* will intensify your insights into the cultural diversity with contemporary works. Here, you will learn about the avant-garde aesthetic of Foster, Calatrava, Starck and Gehry. Meanwhile, a visit to the listed town of Santillana del Mar and the Cave of Altamira* feels like a journey back through time: historic buildings from the 12th century and prehistoric cave paintings around 14,000 years old are a testament to the skills of great masters.
Sat, 22.10.2016
La Coruna, 12.00 – 18.00 hrs
Modernity is reflected in the glazed facades of the new town of La Coruna. Walk along the beach promenade and let the Tower of Hercules, the city’s landmark, show you the way. Radiating like a beacon of belief, the famous cathedral in Santiago de Compostela* is a monument to the Romanesque, early Gothic and baroque periods and towers over enchanting grand squares. The destination of pilgrims from all over the world walking the St. James’s Way once again emphasises the many facets of Europe, which are rarely so clear as during this cruise on the BREMEN.
