Leixoes (Porto)

European cultural treasures

As the explorers of great seafaring nations all those years ago, you will begin your cruise on the Iberian Peninsula and set out for “new territory” in seemingly familiar regions. The legacy of bygone eras can be seen throughout Portugal’s secret capital: get to know Porto on a river trip on the Douro and wine tasting* – with an old town that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

La Coruna/Spain

In Spain, La Coruna beckons you to the present. The glazed facades of the new town reflect the modern, and contrast with the “Tower of Hercules” lighthouse from Roman times. The pilgrimage site of Santiago de Compostela*, a monument to the Romanesque, early Gothic and baroque periods, is a timeless destination for pilgrims worldwide. But for true explorers, Europe’s heaven on earth lies a little further north.

Scilly Isles/England

Flourishing island gems

As your route moves north, your fascination with exploration will grow, and soon you will reach the Scilly Isles, which belong to Cornwall. One day, two islands, countless impressions: during a walk on Tresco and a visit to the Abbey Gardens, with over 4,000 exotic plants, you will almost feel as though in the tropics. The neighbouring island of St. Mary’s, whose picturesque coastal landscape is perfect for walking, beckons with natural beauty.

Southern Ireland (Cork, cruising off Cape Clear)

Ireland: breathtaking from every angle

Where Europe remains wild and untouched, thrilling expedition days await you. With the manoeuvrable BREMEN, you will circumnavigate almost the whole of Ireland and take to the Zodiacs to explore the wonderful landscape and Irish soul. Cork exudes typical Irish charm with its Victorian houses, narrow alleyways and “The Four-Faced Liar”, as the church tower in Shandon is known due to the fact that its four clocks all show different times. Since the wind constantly shifts the hands, the clocks almost never all show the same time. Time seems to have stood still on the famous Rock of Cashel*. First the seat of the kings of Munster, it later belonged to the bishop. Today, Ireland’s history is set in stone on a hill 65 m high. Is it really – as the legend claims – inhabited by fairies and spirits? The picturesque village of Kinsale and its history* are based on reality, not fairy tales. Here, the Irish defeat by the English invaders in the 16th century destroyed their hopes for independence. However, the desire for a better home accompanied the Irish emigrants as they passed by Cape Clear. When the BREMEN cruises off the “tears of Ireland”, you might be lucky enough to spot some whales and dolphins.

Western Ireland (cruising off Great Skellig and Little Skellig, Bere Island, Dingle, cruising off the Cliffs of Moher, Aran Islands)

Breathe deeply and enjoy the pure, refreshing sea air when Great Skellig appears in the Atlantic like a sandstone pyramid. On top of the rock sits a well-preserved monastery from the seventh century, bearing witness to the lives of monks in the early Middle Ages. Off the rugged cliffs of Little Skellig, you will be greeted by flaps and cries. This is the nesting place of the world’s second largest colony of gannets, together with puffins and other sea birds. Bere Island: Breathtaking coastal formations and unspoilt nature are the focus. It is a dream destination for bird and whale watching and hiking. Wild, rugged cliffs and fine sandy bays form the Dingle Peninsula, the pearl of the county of Kerry. Ideal terrain to enjoy wonderful panoramas, and not just on a tour on Mount Brandon*. The natural beauty along the Ring of Dingle* and Kerry’s famous coastal road are equally impressive: picturesque beaches, green hills and cliffs, the latter outdone by the Cliffs of Moher. A spectacular, 200 m high vertical natural backdrop against which the BREMEN will cruise and you will enjoy fascinating sights. Your expedition feeling will intensify off Inishmore, one of the Aran Islands. Will the weather permit a Zodiac landing?

North of Ireland (Killybegs, cruising off Slieve League, Tory Island )

Go ashore to explore numerous pre-Christian and early Christian remnants and the prehistoric Dun Aengus fort. And if you think these impressions cannot be exceeded, Killybegs will bring further surprises: a tour through the 16,000-hectare Glenveagh National Park* will enchant you with deep-blue lakes, the three highest mountains in the county of Donegal and the famous Glenveagh Castle on Loch Veagh. Alternatively, you can embark on a spectacular hike to the cliffs of Slieve League*, the highest in Europe at over 600 m. Feel a sense of delight on board the BREMEN as well when, if the weather is good, these cliffs glow in shades from red to orange in the evening light. The realm of the last king of Ireland; Tory Island is a true bird paradise. You can watch oystercatchers, lapwings, corncrakes, peregrine falcons and northern gannets here.

Warrenpoint/Northern Ireland

Warrenpoint is a premiere for the BREMEN and an insider’s tip. On the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches meet. This is evident in Armagh – Ireland’s Rome* with two impressive cathedrals, each bishop’s seat belonging to one of the denominations. Your visit to Belfast* will give you an insight into the lively heart of Northern Ireland and completes the circuit of your diverse expedition between vibrant culture and unspoilt nature.
