Chile’s southern fjords
(sailing through the Beagle Channel, passing the Garibaldi Glacier, sailing through the Strait of Magellan, Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, intensive cruising in the southern fjords, passing the Pio XI glacier) The journey is the destination: on this unique expedition through the Chilean fjords, a three-dimensional picture book of the earth’s history will be revealed. Thundering waterfalls flow into tranquil mountain lakes, mighty glaciers rise up into the blue sky and the Andean condor flies high over its kingdom. A world that is almost as if it were made for the small, manoeuvrable BREMEN. Depending on local conditions, you can enjoy a number of Zodiac trips, allowing you to experience the beauty of Chile up-close. As soon as you enter the Beagle Channel, you will enjoy fantastic views of the blue, shimmering tongue of ice that is the Garibaldi Glacier. Seabirds and seals dart to and fro near the mighty glacier’s edge. Follow the route taken by the first person to circumnavigate the globe through the famous Strait of Magellan to Punta Arenas. From there, a hike through Magallanes National Reserve* will take you into a world of diverse flora. The fauna, on the other hand, will be the focus on a trip to see the Magellanic penguins on Isla Magdalena*. Thousands of them can be found here at this time of year, allowing you some fascinating sightings. Those who like to discover nature in a more active way will be in their element on a kayak tour of the Strait of Magellan*. In the narrow straits of the Smyth, Union and Kirke channels, the BREMEN will demonstrate its advantages as an expedition ship before you reach a masterpiece of creation from Puerto Natales: the Torres del Paine National Park*. The granite peaks of the famous Torres rise up above waterfalls, forests and shimmering, aquamarine mountain lakes. Perhaps you will encounter condors, rheas and flamingos on a hike to the Base las Torres*. Over the next few days, the BREMEN will take plenty of time to cruise through the Chilean Fjords, with their breathtaking panoramas. Passing through the Collingwood Strait, the Sarmiento and Inocentes channels, the ship will approach one of the highlights of your impressions of Patagonia: the Pio XI Glacier, one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. Enjoy impressive views of the blue-white foot of the glacier, as well as in Eyre Fjord, the Angostura Inglesa and the Messier Channel.

Chile’s northern fjords (Caleta Tortel, intensive cruising in the northern fjords, Puerto Chacabuco (Aisen), Chaiten, Isla de Chiloe, Puerto Montt)
Experience a very special kind of expedition route that only small ships can take: the picturesque interior route through the fjords to Caleta Tortel is very special and will take you to the city of bridges – connected by walkways made of cypress wood that are 7.5 km (4.6 mi.) high. The scenery around Puerto Chacabuco is shaped by high cliffs and forests. On a visit to the Rio Simpson National Reserve and Puerto Aisen*, discover unspoilt nature and picturesque coastal scenery. Chaiten is also testament to the power of nature. The small town at the foot of the volcano of the same name was buried under silt and ash when the volcano erupted in 2008. It is fascinating to see how the former ghost town has been repopulated, with the inhabitants filling the place with life once more. A climb up the Chaiten volcano* will give you an insight into the geological activity. Or you can explore the Patagonian rainforest on a hike through Parque Pumalin*. A combination of indigenous mythology and Christian ideology awaits you on Isla de Chiloe. Here, you can’t miss the customs of the Huilliche, a branch of the Mapuche people, and more than 150 wooden decorated churches of Chiloe*. The magic of life just beginning will fascinate you in a different kind of way, as you visit the Ancud and the Punihuil penguin colony*. This is the only place in the world where Humboldt and Magellanic penguins breed side by side. Snow-topped Osorno Volcano, not far from Puerto Montt, is truly outstanding in every sense. Marvel at its beauty on a tour of Chile’s lake district*.

Niebla, home to diving petrels, albatrosses and skuas, is a small piece of heaven for ornithologists. German immigrants have left their mark in Valdivia* – both in the street names and in the coastal city’s European feel. On a hike in Oncol Park* you will learn about the riches of the Valdivian rainforest. At the end of your cruise, look ahead over the vast expanse of ocean and back over the many impressions you have gained of a unique experience, which will stay in your memory forever.
