Spitsbergen (including Moffen, Liefdefjord, Amsterdamoa, Magdalenefjord, Ny-Alesund, Moellerhafen, Isfjord)

Mighty glaciers, deep fjords and a diverse animal kingdom – Spitsbergen will welcome you with fascinating terrain for passionate explorers. With the highest ice class for passenger ships and a crew with many years of polar experience, the HANSEATIC will set off for the pristine wilderness of the northern and western coast. Thanks to the Zodiacs, you will time and again be at the heart of the experience and, with luck, will be able to see polar bears, whales and seals. For example of the small island of Moffen, famous for the large walrus herds that gather on the flat shingle beach. Perhaps you will spot some polar bears on the coast in the Liefdefjord while you marvel at the blue, shimmering ridge of the mighty Monaco Glacier. The uninhabited island of Amsterdamoa offers an almost surreal panorama, where several small lakes have been formed by the glacier. In the Magdalenefjord, follow the trail of whaling history and see the habitat of many different sea birds in Ny-Alesund. The northernmost bar in the world in Moellerhafen and the natural sculpture of the glacier in the Isfjord may take you by surprise.

    Relaxation at sea
    Passing Jan Mayen

A silhouette that can be seen from afar: Jan Mayen is an active volcano that will get in the mood for the power and magic of Iceland.

    Monday, 16.07.2018

    Reykjavik/Iceland, from 8.00 to 19.00 hrs

In the middle of summer, the best season for cruising, the HANSEATIC arrives in Iceland. Reykjavik, or “Smoky Bay”, reflects the forces of nature beneath the soil here. The largest volcanic island on our planet is known as the “queen of the elements”. Gain some insights on the trip to see Gullfoss, geysers and Thingvellir – the Golden Circle*, or marvel at the majestic scenery on an aerial tour above the island of fire and ice* or in the crystal clear waters snorkelling between two continents*. Unique experiences to enjoy before the HANSEATIC heads for Greenland.

    Wednesday, 18.07.2018 to

Eastern coast of Greenland (Ammassalik, Skjoldungen Sound)

A pure expedition feeling will become your constant companion along Greenland’s coastlines. Here the HANSEATIC heads for the seldom-visited eastern coast. This is where you can find Ammassalik: untouched, barely inhabited and a paradise for hikers with its rugged landscape. With a bit of luck, you will see whales on your way. This will also be the case in Skjoldungen Sound, where you will get into the Zodiacs and embark on a hike in the lush tundra.

    Friday, 20.07.2018

Passage through Prins Christian Sund (depending on ice)

Your passage through Prins Christian Sund will present you with a series of images of impressive glaciers and turquoise waters, as well as the colourful huts of a small fishing village on an expeditionary landing in Igdlorssuit*.

    Saturday, 21.07.2018 to
    Tuesday, 24.07.2018

Western coast of Greenland (Paamiut, Sermilinguaqfjord, Qeqertarsuaq, Disko Bay, Sisimiut)

Another picturesque sight is the old colonial buildings in the harbour at Paamiut on the south-western coast of Greenland, which at this time of year is famous for its large population of humpback and fin whales. Make sure to turn your gaze to the skies: countless guillemots and kittiwakes nest on the steep cliffs of the Sermilinguaqfjord. Steeped in tradition and history, the Inuit culture is not just reflected in the whalebone gateway at Qeqertarsuaq – once a flourishing whalers’ settlement. And then you will see it in front of you – Disko Bay. Countless icebergs drift slowly through the shimmering water – and whether on board the HANSEATIC or the Zodiacs, you will be right in the thick of it. With contrasts such as the traditional and modern, whaling history and nature: the small town of Sisimiut perfectly embodies your Arctic explorer’s dream.
