Individual travel arrangements to Hamburg, departure 18.00 hrs
Your journey to the most beautiful cities and island gems of the North Sea begins in Hamburg. As the HANSEATIC pulls away from the port, the new Elbphilharmonie concert hall looks like a musical clef from the deck – already putting you in the mood for the cultural and musical programme that awaits you. Be it on our diverse excursions during the cruise or your own individual activities – and you will have numerous opportunities to take part.
Amsterdam/Netherlands, arrival 19.30 hrs
You will experience the first part as the ship, having passed through the narrow North Sea Canal, reaches Amsterdam, the “Venice of the north”. The city’s countless canals and bridges are as inviting as the facades of its houses – the narrowest being just about 2.5 m (8.2 ft) wide. On a walking tour of Amsterdam’s famous red-light district*, the city’s nightlife is reflected in the dimly lit windows. During the day, take a city walking tour with a canal trip* to journey back in time through the architectural and historic ages of the city, past the Westerkerk (western church), the Anne Frank Museum and the Royal Palace. The panoramic trip and visit to the Van Gogh Museum* offers a special kind of cultural insight, following the trail of the legendary artist.
Amsterdam, departure 17.00 hrs
Ghent/Belgium, from 8.00 to 0.00 hrs
Having passed through the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal, you will be able to explore medieval Ghent*. Previously a centre of the cloth trade, its old port and historic guildhalls recount the many facets of its history. Romantic Brugge* will also transport you back to the Middle Ages. The glory of days gone by seems to come to life in the almost completely preserved old town.
Antwerp, arrival 8.00 hrs
The HANSEATIC crosses the Westerschelde before reaching Antwerp, Flanders’ gateway to the world. Here a city walking tour including the Rubens House* will take you past the Grote Markt with its impressive town tall to the residence of the city’s best-known inhabitant. Historic architecture and urban flair will define your shore excursion to Belgium’s capital city on a city tour of Brussels*. In Antwerp, an expert invites you to an exclusive beer tasting at the De Koninck brewery*.
Antwerp, departure 13.00 hrs
Cruise on the Westerschelde
Oudeschild/Texel/Netherlands, from 8.00 to 18.00 hrs
The island of Texel is characterised by the peace and tranquillity of pristine landscapes. It lies 15 km (9.3 mi.) off the mainland and is captivating with the diversity of its natural scenery. Sandy beaches, dunes and salt flats contrast with moors, forests and green pastures. This is the home of Texel sheep. Descendants of this popular breed are now kept in New Zealand and Australia, amongst other places. A hike in the De Slufter nature reserve* will take you to see the most beautiful parts of Texel. In the picturesque tidal creeks, only those plants that have adapted to the salt water can grow, including sea lavender, sea thrift and sea aster. A visit to the Ecomare information centre* will tell you more about the fauna of the West Frisian Islands with one of the oldest bird and seal rescue centres in Europe.
Borkum, from 8.00 to 17.00 hrs
Borkum also has a beautiful coastline. The most westerly of all the German islands is attractive with dunes and dykes, idyllic beaches and lush green fields. On the way to your Ostland hike*, there are also unspoilt dune landscapes with desert-like areas and sandy flats. On a hike through the mudflats of the national park in Borkum*, you will be able to explore a diverse habitat of mud, water and tidal creeks.
Helgoland, from 8.00 to 13.00 hrs
Situated 70 km (43 mi.) from the mainland is Germany’s only deep-sea island: Helgoland. A natural monument shaped by the erosive powers of the sea and wind. The air on the island is the most iodine and oxygen rich in Germany, and in 1962 this led to state recognition as a North Sea health resort. Like a red stone lighthouse, “Lange Anne” will show you the way along the edge of the cliffs on your independent shore visit. One of the smallest nature reserves in the world is perched right next to the 50 m (164 ft) high cliffs: the Lummenfelsen. It’s May, which means it’s the breeding season for thousands of seabirds, including various species of gull, guillemots and northern fulmars. In direct contrast is the spa promenade with its numerous cafes, shops and colourful lobster huts known as Hummerbuden – a lively finishing note for your multifaceted North Sea adventure on board the HANSEATIC.
