Madeira: Garden of Eden in the Atlantic
Look forward to unforgettable places and insiders’ tips. In addition to Madeira, the “island of eternal spring”, the HANSEATIC’s route takes in the barely known and seldom-visited neighbouring islands of Ilha Deserta Grande and Selvagem Grande. Eventful days will take you up-close to the beauty of these fascinating island worlds and leave the familiar behind – on a range of excursions, walks and individual explorations. The capital of Funchal, situated in a picturesque bay, welcomes you to Madeira with banana plantations and idyllic gardens. The air is filled with the scent of laurels and eucalyptus when you embark on a levada hike*. Follow the unique irrigation system through lush vegetation and spectacular landscapes. Taking a “tukxi” through Funchal* – an electric vehicle with open sides – will present life in the tiny alleys from a different perspective. It is also thrilling to explore the island capital at your own pace – for example, in the evening after dining in the on-board restaurant. Stroll along the promenade and mix with the islanders in the cafes. Enjoy plenty of sensory impressions on an all-terrain vehicle tour of Madeira* – passing mountain villages to fantastic panoramic views.
Funchal, departure 13.00 hrs
Ilha Deserta Grande
Some nautical miles away, the uninhabited Ilha Deserta Grande presents new terrain for the HANSEATIC. A Zodiac landing in the middle of the nature reserve will get explorers’ hearts racing. A guided tour with rangers provides insights into the home of the Mediterranean monk seal, which is threatened with extinction.
Another premiere destination awaits on the way to the Canary Islands: Selvagem Grande. Subject to official approval, you will walk across the island with conservationists to find out about geckos, Cory’s shearwaters and endemic plants.
Santa Cruz de la Palma/La Palma/Spain, from 9.00 to 22.00 hrs
Contrasting landscape off the coast of Africa
With their mild climate, the Canary Islands are particularly popular in the autumn. Look forward to the fascinating aspects of these three islands selected for the HANSEATIC route: La Palma, the heavily forested “isla verde”; Tenerife, a hiker’s paradise with Spain’s highest peak; El Hierro, the rugged, tranquil biosphere reserve. The natural spectacles continue when the imposing volcanic landscape welcomes you to La Palma. With its 16th- and 17th-century buildings, the coastal city of Santa Cruz is of great cultural and historic value. Take the opportunity here to explore the old town at your own pace and stroll along the Avenida Maritima with its typical wooden balconies. Nature lovers can take a ride to the Caldera de Taburiente National Park* along breathtaking escarpments to one of the world’s largest erosion craters. Volcanos and wine* flow together when you visit a landscape of cooled lava streams, pine forests and vineyards.
Santa Cruz/Tenerife, from 9.00 to 22.00 hrs
Puerto de la Estaca/El Hierro, from 9.00 to 18.00 hrs
The grand forces of nature have even shaped El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands. Away from the tourist routes, explore the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve* or follow in the footsteps of the native inhabitants on a hike to the Arbol del Garoe*, the sacred tree. According to legend, the moisture of the clouds was caught in its crown and supplied the people with water – a tale depicted in the island’s coat of arms.

Cape Verde (Sao Vicente, Santo Antao, Sal )
Cape Verde –still rarely visited
Gentle bays, fine beaches, desert landscapes, magnificent mountains and lush forests bid you welcome. With around 350 days of sunshine a year, Cape Verde offers very special highlights – with colonial treasures and African “joie de vivre”. Mindelo on Sao Vicente is a melting pot of cultures – discover its market and old town on a walk through the city*. Mindelo and Baia das Gatas* provide a fascinating contrast: pure nature, created by elemental forces and demonstrated by the bizarre lava formations in the “bay of cats”. Or go off-road* and head deep inland to spectacular mountain ranges and volcanic craters. The forces of nature have also shaped Santo Antao. Travelling on foot through the fertile Paul Valley will bring you particularly close to nature on the pristine island of Santo Antao* – as will a scenic journey* along former trading routes. On Sal, probably the sunniest island in the archipelago, enter a paradise of archaic deserts and dry valleys, silent volcanoes and oases. An island tour* takes you to the relics of what was once the centre of salt mining. Or take an all-terrain vehicle to the wild north* and the rocky cliffs of Buraconda. Enjoy this timeless cruise through golden October days.
