Charter flight from Duesseldorf** to Longyearbyen
Longyearbyen/Spitsbergen/Norway, departure 19.00 hrs
Spitsbergen (including Moffen, Liefdefjord, Amsterdamoa, Magdalenefjord, Ny-Alesund, Moellerhafen)
Spitsbergen: wonderful archipelago
Enjoy overwhelming natural spectacles and fascinating wildlife on Norway’s “Cold Coast”. Massive glaciers, deep fjords and untouched wilderness form the perfect terrain for passionate explorers on Spitsbergen. The HANSEATIC sets sail for the north and west coast with the highest ice class for passenger ships and the crew’s years of polar experience. Intensive expedition moments are guaranteed when the weather and ice permit you to explore the natural surroundings. With a little luck, polar bears, whales, Arctic foxes and walruses will appear. For example, off the small island of Moffen, which is famous for the large walrus herds that gather on the flat shingle beach. Perhaps you will spot some polar bears on the coast in the Liefdefjord while you marvel at the blue, shimmering ridge of the mighty Monaco Glacier. Amsterdamoa offers an almost surreal panorama. Several small lakes, formed due to the glacier, contrast with the glistening ice. Cast your gaze over majestic mountain landscapes in the Magdalenefjord, and discover traces of the history of whaling. Ny-Alesund is now an international centre for Arctic research. Numerous seabirds call this area home, alongside a few scientists. In Moellerhafen, visit the northernmost bar in the world.
Relaxation at sea
Cruising off Jan Mayen
The silhouette of the mountains in the archipelago, which rise up to 1,700 m (5,577 ft), remain visible as the HANSEATIC heads for the Arctic Ocean – until an active volcano gets you in the mood for the power and magic of Iceland off the inhospitable island of Jan Mayen.
Relaxation at sea
Iceland (cruising off Latrabjarg, Grundarfjoerdur, Reykjavik)
Iceland: wild beauty
Iceland’s dramatically beautiful landscape forms the backdrop to thrilling natural experiences. Observe the animal kingdom at close quarters off the bird-inhabited cliffs of Latrabjarg – the nesting place of thousands of puffins, guillemots and auks. Discover the major role of nature’s primeval force in forming the western fjords from Grundarfjoerdur on a panoramic trip to the westerly Snaefellsnes Peninsula*, shaped by the volcano described by Jules Verne as the entrance to the underworld in “A Journey to the Center of the Earth”. Actively experience Iceland on a hike on Kirkjufell Mountain* or while riding Icelandic horses*. Reykjavik, or “Smoky Bay”, reflects the forces of nature beneath the soil. Gain an impression on the Golden Circle – Gullfoss and geysers* expedition. Unforgettable impressions will also abound on the fligth over the island of fire and ice*.
Relaxation at sea
Eastern coast of Greenland (Ammassalik, Skjoldungen Sound)
Greenland: home of whales and world of the Inuit
A pure expedition feeling will take hold when the HANSEATIC heads to the seldom-visited east coast and the unpredictable ice conditions will determine what happens. Raw, untouched, barely inhabited – with its rugged mountain and fjord landscape, Ammassalik is a hiker’s paradise. Here, as on the entire route, you will have good opportunities for whale watching. This will also be the case in the Skjoldungen Sound, surrounded by glaciers, where the Zodiacs will take you ashore to hike in the tundra.
Passage through Prins Christian Sound (depending on ice)
Western coast of Greenland (Paamiut, Sermilinguaqfjord, Qeqertarsuaq, Disko Bay, Sisimiut)
The old colonial buildings in the harbour of Paamiut are very picturesque. The south-western coast of Greenland is famous for its large population of humpback and fin whales at this time of year. Make sure to turn your gaze to the skies: in Sermilinguaqfjord, you can watch numerous guillemots and kittiwakes nesting in the steep rock faces. Steeped in tradition and history, the Inuit culture is not just reflected in the whalebone gateway at Qeqertarsuaq. This town on Disko Island was once a flourishing whalers’ settlement and is surrounded by fascinating rugged basalt cliffs. And then you will see it in front of you – Disko Bay. Cruising with the HANSEATIC and the Zodiacs takes you right to the heart of the adventure: countless icebergs drift slowly past. With the contrasts of whaling history and nature, the small town of Sisimiut perfectly embodies your Arctic explorer’s dream.
