Chukotka/Russia (Provideniya, Achen Lagoon , Preobrazhenya Bay , Gavriila Bay , passing Cape Navarin)

The unknown land of the Chukchis
Become one of the few people to explore the remote habitat of whales, sea birds, walruses and seals first-hand. Provideniya, the first stop in Chukotka, can only be reached by water or air. The city’s museum will provide insights into the lives of the Chukchi people, which is traditionally shaped by fishing, hunting and breeding reindeer. One of many Zodiac rides and landings on this cruise will take you to Achen Lagoon to walk through the tundra, where you might spot the first of many bear tracks. Keep an eye out for whales, which can surface at any time – and not just on the way to Preobrazhenya Bay. You will be able to watch various sea and wading birds on a landing at Gavriila Bay and when the HANSEATIC passes Cape Navarin. Now your adventure is truly under way.

Kamchatka (including Anastasia Bay , Natalii Bay , Bogoslova Island , Verkhoturova , Bering Island , Zhupanova River , Petropavlovsk)

Fire and fascination in Kamchatka
Volcanoes and geysers, cliffs and dense forests with crystal-clear rivers in which brown bears hunt for food. Here, the flexibility, experience and pioneering spirit of our crew will combine to provide the best spots for viewing animals and the scenery – for example, in Anastasia Bay, where the landscape glows in the most beautiful autumn colours when the weather is good. Sea birds glide alongside the ship, and with luck you will see an albatross circling overhead. You might even see some more whales in Natalii Bay and off Verkhoturova. The bird-inhabited cliffs of Bogoslova Island, home to horned puffins, tufted puffins, thick-billed murres and common murres, are a paradise for ornithologists. During a Zodiac landing in Komandor Bay on Bering, you can visit the grave of the famous explorer and discover the local culture in the typical village of Nikolskoje with our experts. On the Zhupanova River, you have a good chance of spotting brown bears and Steller’s sea eagles. To marvel at the spectacle of sulphur springs and geysers from the perspective of the sea eagle, you will set out from Petropavlovsk on a helicopter flight to the Valley of Geysers*. Even the flight to Nalychevo Nature Park* promises breathtaking panoramas and bathing in the hot springs. Alternatively, a ride in an all-terrain vehicle and hike up the Avacha volcano* will reward you with fantastic views.

Kuril Islands (including Shumshu , Atlasova , Lovushka Islands, Matua , Yankicho (Ushishir) ()

Kuril Islands and Sakhalin – pristine nature in faraway Asia
Overgrown volcanic cones shimmer through the mist and the spray thunders against steep cliffs: the Kuril Islands remain pristine territory to be explored in the Zodiacs. Enjoy overwhelming natural spectacles and exciting animal observations – including sea otters in the kelp forests off the island of Shumshu. The ancient forces that once created this landscape of contrasts lend significance to the volcano Alaid on Atlasova. At over 2,000 m in height, it is the highest in the Kuril Islands. The basalt coast of the Lovushka Islands, which you will discover while cruising, provide a protected habitat for marine mammals and sea birds. Matua, home to massive alder forests, is dominated by one of the most active volcanoes. You can press on in the Zodiacs to the heart of a steep caldera on Yankicho if the weather is good. Sakhalin will be one of the highlights in the Sea of Okhotsk.

Wed, 28.09.2016

Off the east coast, land on the island of Tyuleny in the Zodiacs. Its beaches are home to huge colonies of seals and Steller sea lions, and its jagged cliffs are populated by innumerable common murres. Just as the animals have commandeered a hotel from the Soviet era, the fascinating nature of the Far East will capture your imagination – on this unique expedition with the HANSEATIC.
