Manaus (Amazon)/Brazil

Accompanied by a concert of birdsong and the noises of the jungle, the HANSEATIC glides on up the river of life to Manaus (Amazon). As the centre of the rubber trade, the city achieved its legendary prosperity in the 19th century, and this is still reflected today in the treasures of the magnificent theatre, Teatro Amazonas: the splendid interior with crystal chandeliers and marble portals was brought to the jungle from Europe. Explore the city’s history and opera house*, and on an aerial tour above Manaus*, discover a spectacle of nature from a breathtaking perspective: at the famous Meeting of the Waters, the “black” Rio Negro and the muddy yellow Rio Solimoes flow alongside each other for several kilometres. An encounter with pink dolphins* in the water offers a very special experience.

Upstream on the Amazon with Zodiac landings
(including Badajos, Cuxiu Muni, Rio Jutai, Leticia, Pevas, Nauta)

Natural wonders in the heart of South America
Only small, manoeuvrable expedition ships like the HANSEATIC can navigate the upper reaches of the Amazon beyond Manaus. Thanks to its shallow draught, the ship can continue westwards and provide you with some unforgettable opportunities to observe the natural surroundings and wildlife. Depending on local conditions, the crew and experts will take you on numerous Zodiac rides and landings right into the green lungs of our planet. Be on the lookout, for example, for the famous pink river dolphins and the horned screamer birds at Badajos. Tiny hummingbirds zip through the air, and the cry of the howler monkeys can be heard from the treetops. In Cuxiu Muni and other places, you can visit a typical village of the native inhabitants – and go on a late-evening Zodiac tour for an intense experience of the magic of the jungle at night. Listen to the chorus of hundreds of frogs and cicadas, and observe caymans and nocturnal animals such as bats. With the Zodiacs, explore the Rio Jutai, where brightly coloured toucans and magnificent varieties of orchid can be seen on the banks. The hustle and bustle of the lively markets and the traditional dances and ceremonies of the inhabitants are what characterise the Colombian city of Leticia and the Peruvian native settlement of Pevas.
