Falkland Islands

A fascinating bird paradise – the Falkland Islands
The Zodiac fleet will be lowered to the water for the first time on Christmas Eve to head for the Falkland Islands. During several landings, our experts will accompany you on hikes through the dwarf shrubs and grasses that are typical of the islands. Marvel at the head-high tussock grass and the diversity of the bird world, where rockhopper and Magellanic penguins bid you welcome; there is also a chance that black-bellied storm petrels, silver teal, albatrosses or peregrine falcons will suddenly appear before your very eyes. In Stanley, you will be welcomed to the small island capital with its very British charm.

South Georgia

South Georgia – realm of the king penguins
Flexible, spontaneous and impressive: the Zodiacs are used several times a day to enable expeditionary experiences and wildlife sightings that take your breath away. Take standing in front of a gigantic colony of king penguins, for example. Hundreds of thousands of these animals populate the slopes and coasts of the island. During spectacular landings over three intensive days, including in Salisbury Plain and Gold Harbour, you will encounter fur seals and sedate elephant seals on the beaches along the craggy coastline, while black-browed albatrosses and giant petrels make their nests in among the rocks. In the former Grytviken whaling station, you will visit the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton and remember the heroic efforts with which this man once rescued his team.

South Orkney Islands , Weddell Sea , South Shetland Islands , Antarctic Peninsula ]

You will learn about the work of modern polar researchers on the South Orkney Islands, where, weather permitting, you will visit the oldest permanently inhabited research station in the Antarctic, the Argentinian Orcadas station (subject to authorisation). And with a little luck, you will have your first sighting of majestic icebergs off Signy Island.

Pure adventure: Weddell Sea, South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula
Where weather and ice dictate the route, only a genuine expedition ship such as the HANSEATIC can guarantee you the full Antarctic experience. It is small, manoeuvrable and, thanks to its highest ice class for passenger ships, even capable of sailing through ice floes and pack ice. The ship clears its inexorable path in the direction of the Antarctic Peninsula. Experience magical moments when the Zodiacs take you ashore, for example on Paulet Island in the Weddell Sea, bringing you right up close to thousands of Adelie penguins. Or when cruising in the Antarctic Sound, where huge tabular icebergs drift silently through the water. Every day on board passes in the spirit of daring pioneers, such as Otto Nordenskjöld, who once endured great hardship to explore this remote region. With their many years of experience in the polar regions of this world, the captain, crew and the well-versed experts in various specialised topics will provide you with enthralling expedition experiences that you will never forget. For instance, on the black volcanic beaches of Deception Island, you can take in the impressive view of the caldera. Or marvel at the wonders of Paradise Bay. With the Zodiacs, you will glide past sparkling icebergs to majestic, lofty glacial towers, the crevices of which glow blue. If the ice and weather conditions permit a landing, you will be able to set foot on the Antarctic mainland – an exceptionally moving moment during your expedition. Further south, your journey takes you through the narrow Lemaire Channel: spectacular peaks on both sides make this waterway one of the world’s most beautiful shipping passages. In the Penola Strait, the excitement on board rises yet again. How far to the south can the HANSEATIC actually sail? This is a question that can only be answered on board when you get there. Yet one thing is certain, the last landings with the Zodiacs will enable you to enjoy the full beauty of this Antarctic wonderland between huge colonies of Adelie and chinstrap penguins. Passage through the Neumayer-Kanal then serves up the grand finale with panoramic views of amazing glaciers.
