Nunavut/Canada (Clyde River , Sam Ford Fjord , Pond Inlet , Beechey Island )

The adventure begins
Majestic fjords, steep cliffs, rushing rivers, imposing glaciers – the countryside surrounding the remote Inuit settlement of Clyde River will impress you early in the cruise with its fantastic views. It is one of the most beautiful in Nunavut. These unforgettable experiences will continue on a spectacular Zodiac ride to the untouched glacier worlds of the Sam Ford Fjord. Just how are humans able to live in this wonderful, yet extreme, natural environment? You can find out in the typical Inuit village of Pond Inlet. An exhibition gives insights into the traditions of the original inhabitants with their fishing and hunting skills. The polar bears have also adapted perfectly to life on the ice. With a little luck, you will spot them off Beechey Island where these majestic animals often roam. The island itself is home to three graves of members of the lost expedition of Sir John Franklin, whose ships are most likely still hidden in the pack ice somewhere. Walk to the final resting place of these men and marvel at the myths surrounding their fates.

Expedition to Ellesmere Island

Ellesmere Island also promises pure fascination. The tenth largest island in the world has been a national park since 1985, and it will take your breath away with views of spectacular mountain peaks and colossal glacier formations. This is the perfect way to rouse your lust for adventure and is reserved for but a few people: as it has the highest ice class for passenger ships, the HANSEATIC will continue to press northwards. Just how far exactly? That depends on the weather and ice – we will only know once we arrive there. But one thing is certain: You will enjoy unforgettable views and feel like a true pioneer on this expedition into the white infinity of the ice.

Northern coast of Greenland (Qaanaq , Siorapaluk )

Far removed from the noise of the jets at the American Thule Air Base, during the Cold War Qaanaq was relocated to its current location. However, it is steeped in history for other reasons, too; many expeditions by the polar researcher Knud Rasmussen set out from this region. The remote village of Siorapaluk holds a special surprise in store, as it is the northernmost settlement in Greenland. Delight those at home with a picture postcard and the coveted postmark of the northernmost post office in Greenland.

Western coast of Greenland (Uummannaq , Ilulissat , Disko Bay ,
Sisimiut )

Enjoy the indescribable panoramic views of the towering icebergs as we pass Cape York. Uummannaq is like a heart in the most literal sense of the word – the town, with its colourful timber houses, lies in the shadow of a heart-shaped mountain and is one of the most beautiful settlements in Greenland. On a Greenlandic scale, Ilulissat is a large city. Enjoy the flair of “city life” – and walk to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, Ilulissat Icefjord, where powerful icebergs pile up and glitter magically in the sunlight. On the way, you will pass the former settlement site of Sermermiut and the remnants of the Saqqaq culture. Take a completely different approach and experience gigantic ice formations on a Zodiac ride to Disko Bay. Mass blocks of ice which have broken off the glacier drift in the sea – one of the most impressive natural spectacles in Greenland. You can enjoy works of art created by human hands in the handicrafts centre in Sisimiut, the second largest town in Greenland. Get to know its modern way of life or take a walk with the experts to the historic Tele Island. To round off your expedition, you will get the answer as to how far north you managed to go with the HANSEATIC. Just one of many highlights to your varied expedition.
