Fertile eldorado for explorers
In the middle of the eternally green jungle, more than 4,000 kilometres away from the mouth of the Amazon, your adventure starts in the Peruvian city of Iquitos. In the stunning natural surroundings of the largest rainforest in the world, there await unforgettable experiences. A perfect expedition territory for a small ship like the HANSEATIC and its Zodiacs.
Upstream to the upper Amazon with Zodiac landings (including Libertad, Leticia, Jutai River, Cuxiu Muni, Rio Negro)
The weather and current conditions determine the course of the eventful days during which the robust inflatable boats are in constant use and take you to places such as the settlement of Libertad. This is where Yagua Indians live: once a nomadic people, who hunted with poisoned arrows and blowpipes, they have now settled along the river. The friendly inhabitants offer handicraft and traditional masks. An important trading centre of Colombia, Peru and Brazil is Leticia. At the markets along the river’s edge, you will be impressed by the diversity of tropical fruits and vegetables before the HANSEATIC moves further upstream to a real treasure trove full of life. Explore the green heart of South America on sensational Zodiac excursions and landings, and advance even deeper into the jungle on branches and tributaries, such as the Jutai River. While the Zodiacs coast past bromeliads with brilliant-red blossoms, the cry of the Amazonian parrots can be heard across the water. You might see a group of blue-and-gold macaws settling in a treetop. It is not only in Cuxiu Muni that you might see, with a little luck, the famous botos – the pink river dolphins native to the Amazon. From every angle, you will continue to discover a fascinating animal kingdom. Large-billed terns fishing in the water and saffron finches picking the seeds from the floating meadows. In addition, native plants such as the red passion flower unleash a “firework display” of colours. Experience another fantastic natural spectacle at the legendary “meeting of waters”: the black Rio Negro enters the clay-yellow Solimoes and the two rivers do not mix immediately, but flow next to each other for kilometres. The HANSEATIC will explore the native shore landscapes of the Rio Negro depending on the water level. This protected region provides great opportunities for unforgettable wildlife observation.
The rhythm of South American up close
A large city in the centre of the rainforest: Manaus fascinates with a turbulent history and a lively present. Get to know the former Portuguese stronghold and mission station on the excursion history of the city and opera house*. Enjoy sensational outlooks over Brazil’s seventh-largest city and the “meeting of waters” by sea plane over Manaus*, before being immersed in the infectious beat and the zest for life of South America in Parintins.
Downstream to the lower Amazon with Zodiac landings (including Parintins, Alter do Chao, Guajara)
With magnificent costumes and rousing music, dancers tell the old legend of the resurrection of a bull. The high spirits of the people is in no way inferior to the sumptuous natural surroundings. Immerse yourself again in the natural riches of Amazonia as the HANSEATIC heads for the mouth of the legendary river. Butterflies the size of plates dance in the air and tiny hummingbirds buzz silently over the water: from the dense green of the jungle, you can hear the concert of birds and howler monkeys. Experience a true bather’s paradise akin to the Caribbean on the fine, white sandy beach of Alter do Chao. Indulge in a few hours of sweet idleness here, and in Guajara delight in spotting various bird species and the mighty water buffalo.
