The Amazon: the exotic lifeline
In Belem come on board the HANSEATIC and follow the more than 4,000-kilometre-long, winding course of the Amazon. Depending on the weather and current conditions, the Zodiacs are in constant use and you will discover the narrow branches of the mighty river, which wind through the thicket of the jungle and leave other travellers hidden from sight. This is how you will explore the secrets of Amazonia in depth – always accompanied by experts, who will show you wonders of nature such as in the Breves Channels. In the tropical, lush riverbank vegetation with Moriche and Acai palms, you might catch glimpses of swallow-tailed kites and black vultures, whilst around the little settlement of Guajara you can spot different species of herons and buzzards. An unforgettable sight is the mighty water buffalo, which walk so far into the water that they can only just stand and graze easily on the water plants. The Amazon surprises with a sandy beach that appears practically Caribbean in Alter do Chao. Enjoy relaxing hours on the warm, white sand and take a refreshing dip in the emerald-green Rio Tapajos.

Upstream to the lower Amazon with Zodiac landings (including Guajara, Alter do Chao, Parintins, Canacari)

Cultural treasure trove of the tropics
Colourful costumes and infectious music: the inhabitants of Parintins celebrate the dance spectacle “Bumba-meu-boi” in high spirits. Get infected by the exuberant zest for life before taking an atmospheric Zodiac tour at Canacari. Flowering in the floating meadows is the largest water lily in the world – the circular leaves can reach diameters of up to three metres.

Sun, 12.04.2015

Accompanied by a concert of bird calls and the sounds of the jungle, the HANSEATIC continues floating along the river of life towards Manaus. The metropolis came into incredible wealth in the 19th century as the centre of the rubber trade, and this wealth is reflected in the treasures of the magnificent Teatro Amazonas (Amazon Theatre): the sumptuous interior decoration with cut-glass chandeliers and marble portals were brought to the centre of the jungle from Europe. Investigate the history of the city and opera house*, and discover by sea plane over Manaus*  a spectacle of nature from a breathtaking perspective: at the famous “meeting of waters” the  “black” Rio Negro and the sandy-coloured Rio Solimoes flow next to each other for kilometres in the channel.

- Wed, 22.04.2015

Upstream to the upper Amazon with Zodiac landings (including Badajos, Cuxiu Muni, Jutai River, Leticia, Pevas, Nauta)

Natural spectacles deep in the heart of South America
Only small, agile expedition ships like the HANSEATIC can travel the upper reaches of the Amazon past Manaus. Thanks to its low draught, the ship pushes further westward and makes it possible for you to enjoy unforgettable wildlife and nature observation. Depending on the local conditions, the crew and experts guide you on numerous Zodiac excursions and landings, right into the green lungs of our planet. Keep an eye out for the famous pink river dolphins and horned screamers at Badajos. Delicate hummingbirds buzz through the air, and from the treetops you can hear the cries of the howler monkeys. It is not only in Cuxiu Muni that you will visit a typical Indian village – and start in the late evening on a Zodiac tour on which you will feel the magic of a tropical night most intensely. Listen to the multi-voiced song of frogs and cicadas, and see caimans and nocturnal animals such as bats. On the Zodiacs, you will also conquer the Jutai River, on whose banks you will see colourful toucans and glorious species of orchids which will indulge your senses. The hustle and bustle at the lively markets and the traditional dances and rituals of the inhabitants characterise the Colombian city of Leticia and the Peruvian Indian village of Pevas. To complete these eventful days, the HANSEATIC hazards a very special adventure: it heads to Nauta. The small village is located so far upstream that it can only be reached at high water levels. Will the HANSEATIC manage to advance there? This question can only be answered on board – even though the expedition will draw to a close in Iquitos,  it will leave you with grand memories that you will rave about for a long time to come.
