Alaska’s Inside Passage/USA (Cruising in the Misty Fjords,Ketchikan, Wrangell, Juneau)

You can also look forward to experiencing a masterpiece of nature’s making when the HANSEATIC cruises through the Misty Fjords. Deeply carved fjords, mighty glaciers and rushing waterfalls are home to a unique animal kingdom. This is the start of Alaska’s Inside Passage, one of the most spectacular shipping routes in the world. One fascinating panorama gives place to another, and as the HANSEATIC wends her way through this narrow, twisting waterway, it can make the most of its advantages as a small and easily manoeuvrable expeditionary vessel. Starting from Ketchikan, the centre of Alaska’s Native American culture, seize the opportunity to Observe Bears in the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary* or take a Flight over the Misty Fjords* to experience one of America’s greatest natural treasures from a breathtaking bird’s-eye perspective. Alternatively, immerse yourself in the Nature Adventure in Tongass National Park* and familiarise yourself with the ecosystem of a rainforest of the temperate latitudes. Unforgettable experiences are also offered by the picturesquely situated city of Wrangell: for example, when you set off to Observe Bears on Anan Creek*, where with a bit of luck you may spot black and brown bears in their natural habitat. Or when you take a Flight over the LeConte Glacier* and enjoy fantastic views of the gigantic Stikine Ice Field. After passing through the Wrangell Narrows with their beautiful panoramas of islands and mountains, the HANSEATIC steers for Juneau, the only state capital in the USA which cannot be reached by road and so is only approachable by boat or by plane. A Helicopter and Dog Sled Tour* gives you the chance to explore the fascinating Mendenhall Glacier at the gates of the city. A Boat Trip* will immerse you in quite a different kind of world when, with the help of an underwater microphone, you listen to whales singing.

When you cruise off Point Adolphus, for example, a favourite summer resort of humpback whale families, you can expect fascinating encounters with these giants of the sea. From the deck of the ship, you will observe the majestic mammals as they dive and rise to the surface of the water.

By way of the beautiful scenery of the Inian Pass, the HANSEATIC sets course for the mighty, calving Hubbard Glacier. In the pack ice at the glacier’s cut-off point, you will observe the bizarre formations of shimmering ice at close quarters. No less impressive is the majestic Chenega Glacier. If the weather permits, you will be able to take in this overwhelming backdrop from the Zodiacs while you watch the fascinating antics of the seals. In the days that follow, you will have the opportunity of meeting the biggest land predators in the world on fabulous excursions and Zodiac trips.
