Sakhalin/Russia (Korsakov, Tyuleniy , Piltun Lagoon )

Sea of Okhotsk – a true natural wonder
The first chapter of your breathtaking expedition starts at the port of Korsakov, Sakhalin. The island owes its literary fame to the travel report named after it written by Anton Chekhov, who describes day-to-day life in the penal colony operated by the tsars. As part of a visit to the museum of local history, impressions of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk* will give you an idea of the lives of the present-day inhabitants. The population density in this part of Russia is incredibly low, and the Sea of Okhotsk, by contrast, is home to an immense number of animals – you will discover this first hand as part of your expedition to the small island of Tyuleniy. No people, thousands of Steller sea lions, numerous northern fur seals with their harems and countless marine birds. The habitat of the diverse fauna is substantially influenced by the tundra along with the rugged coastlines. In the Piltun Lagoon, the Zodiacs take you ashore so that you can experience this wild and romantic terrain on a natural history walking tour. Keep an eye out for grey whales in the water and the striking spotted seals.

Sea of Okhotsk (Iony , Shantar islands , Malminskiye islands ,
Talan island , Matykil Islands , Cape Yapon )

The Zodiac trips along the rugged rocks of the tiny island of Iony are characterised by wildlife sightings: mystical in the mist, the island is home to millions of marine birds. Every summer, around 5,000 huge sea lions gather here to mate, and frequently some of them come to the Zodiacs out of curiosity. Don’t forget to look to the sky to spot a whiskered auklet or a tufted puffin, for example. With a bit of luck, the majestic Steller sea eagle will circle above you on its flight to the bird paradise of the Shantar islands. To follow it there can be a real challenge if the waters are iced over. Enjoy the intense experience of this natural paradise while cruising in ice or on a Zodiac ride. Equipped to the highest ice class for passenger ships and with the polar experience of the crew, you will get the feeling of being on a true expedition on the HANSEATIC.

Breathtaking impressions also await you in perhaps the most remote national park in Russia: the Malminskiye islands, on which marine birds, seals and sea otters live undisturbed. A sensational bird paradise with the most diverse species is the small Talan island. These apparently forgotten worlds are ideal explorer territories for your numerous Zodiac rides, for instance around the Matykil Islands. After landing on Cape Yapon, you are invited to wander through the tundra vegetation, which is home to Labrador tea, moss and lichen – and you can enjoy the flora and fauna in peace.

Kamchatka (Cape Ukhtolokskiy , Kruglaya Bay )

Kamchatka and the Kuril islands – Russia’s true wilderness
The land of volcanoes, geysers and bears will amaze you time and again: Kamchatka’s vastness and primitiveness will not escape you when you land with the Zodiacs on Cape Ukhtolokskiy – brown bear territory. With a bit of luck, you will find a treasure on the beach in the form of old Japanese glass marbles, which were used to weigh down fishing nets and now wash up along the cape. Time and again, the experience determines the route, which after a stay in Kruglaya Bay takes you to the Kuril islands – with their unspoilt natural beauty, they are some of the most incredible landscapes in the world.

Kuril Islands (Atlasova , Shumshu )

A special magic emanates from the island of Altasova, dominated by the more than 2,000-metre-high “picture book” volcano Alaid. On a walk with our experts, the island reveals its true natural beauty. The scenery of the island of Shumshu is shaped by wet marshland, seas and ponds. In the grassland tundra, irises, globeflowers and orchids flourish.
