Chan May is the starting point for numerous excursion destinations in the wider area: the former imperial city of Hue lies in an attractive setting between hills and rice paddies on a meander in the Perfume River, whose name originates from the scented rafts of sandalwood. Hue is the heart of Buddhist Vietnam with more than 300 temples and pagodas. Almost every one of the top sights in Hue is World Heritage listed: the Forbidden City, Thien Mu Pagoda and the most beautiful tombs of the emperors. During the past two decades, UNESCO has extensively restored and reconstructed many of these sites. Hoi An, whose historic old town is likewise a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is situated picturesquely surrounded by paddy fields on the Thu Bon River. Sights include the many well-preserved merchant houses, the exuberant old market on the river and the Japanese bridge with the square pagoda in the middle.
