Calvi is one of Corsica?s most beautiful cities with a small old town filled with winding alleyways and squares dating back hundreds of years. Calvi is the ideal starting point for an excursion into the neighbouring area, especially to see the typical Corsican macchia. Macchia is an exuberant and enchanting mixture of thorn-covered and prickly sclerophyllous plants, trees, bushes and grasses. Typical plants include the common rock rose, phillyria, arbutus, myrtle, broom, buckthorn, thyme, lavender, fennel and rosemary. A special feature of Corsica are the tafoni, created by the weathering of medium to coarse-grained stones. They look somewhat like honeycomb and can be found in an extraordinary variety of shapes.
