From picturesque bays to the desert sand, from tropical rain forests to cacti, from modern bustling cities to rustic villages – MEXICO has some scenery made for the movies to mark the start of your cruise. The picturesque church of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe on the Malecon in PUERTO VALLARTA was the venue for Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s wedding. A boat trip to Banderas Bay* is also full of promise. At this time of year, there is a good chance of getting a close-up view of humpback whales.

After a relaxing break at sea, the EUROPA will reach one of France’s most magnificent outposts: FRENCH POLYNESIA. Still today, the MARQUESAS will get explorers’ hearts beating faster. The untamed nature of the volcanic islands extends right down to the idyllic beaches, and the lush plant life will make you want to make further discoveries in the Tovi’i highlands* of NUKU HIVA. Numerous mystical cultural sites stand as testament to the rich history of the remote islands. The moss-covered Ua Pou stone statues still watch over the steps of the temple platforms. Part of the islands’ tradition is a great esteem for legends. Like on HIVA OA, for example, when the “Land of Men” was formed, the gods created the roof last – with Hiva Oa as the supporting beam. The TUAMOTU ARCHIPELAGO is also the stuff daydreams are made of: the world’s largest coral island group is like a collection of scattered emeralds in the ocean, with magnificent beaches to tempt you to do sweet nothing. On RANGIROA, a special kind of gem is waiting to be discovered: this is where the precious black pearls are cultivated and there will be an opportunity to learn more about them on a visit to a pearl farm*.

The SOCIETY ISLANDS are made up of 14 islands and each one is a fairy tale in itself. Surrounded by beautiful coral reefs are HUAHINE and RAIATEA, where you can find a great place to sunbathe on little “motus”* islets in the middle of lagoons. A special kind of delight is the heart-shaped MOOREA. With green volcanic peaks and crystal-clear bays, it has everything to make you fall hopelessly in love. The underwater world* is just as fascinating: take a snorkelling trip* to observe the colourful inhabitants of the reef and with a little luck you may even see some stingrays. Moorea’s “big sister” is TAHITI. Here it will be time to take your leave of paradise – or extend your treasure hunt in the South Seas with an attractive subsequent cruise.
