Heligoland
Germany’s little archipelago in the North Sea is a natural paradise that can only be explored by foot. A walk along the cliff-top path takes you to the Lummen cliffs. Thousands of sea birds, including guillemots, herring gulls and fulmars, populate the steep cliffs. Continue on the same path to the landmark of Heligoland, Langen Anna (“long Anna”), an impressive rock column of red sandstone. As well as some fantastic views, the old bunkers on this multifaceted island also provide an insight into darker times. Having been destroyed during the Second World War, the colourful lobster shacks around the harbour were lovingly restored. Today, they are a great place to while away some time, with pubs, cafes and art galleries. You can take the lift or walk up around 260 steps from the lower island (“Unterland”) to the upper island (“Oberland”) - an architectural feature. From the top, you will be treated to views over the offshore bathing dunes.
List/Sylt
Why not begin your discovery of the “Queen of the North Sea” in Germany’s northernmost municipality, relaxing on a deck chair, for example, in the remote Blidselbucht bay. Enjoy the view of the waves breaking onto miles of sandy beach. Nearby are the mudflats of the Schleswig-Holstein Wattenmeer national park, with rolling dunes and wild moorlands to explore by bicycle. Refreshments can be found in exclusive Kampen with its fine restaurants and historic thatched roofs. If you would like to discover the unspoiled side of island life, pay a visit to sleepy Keitum. Amongst former captains’ houses and cottage gardens can be found the Sylt Heimatmuseum, where you can get an insight into the island’s history. The Rantum Basin is also worth a visit – a walk along the banks is an opportunity to marvel at the beautiful marshland and diverse bird life. Fresh breezes blow over the old fishing village of Hörnum on the southern tip of the island. The lighthouse here has been showing seafarers the way for over a century – and it will show you the way to magnificent views of the North Sea.
