Callao (Lima)/Peru, departure 17.00 hrs

Callao is Peru’s biggest harbour and close to the capital, Lima. Despite chaotic traffic conditions, a constant grey mist that the locals call “garua”, and the rapidly growing shanty towns – formerly known as “barriadas” and today called “pueblos jovenes” – numerous historic sights dating from the colonial era and impressive collections of Peruvian art offer visitors a wealth of interesting impressions.

Peru (Salaverry, Isla Lobos de Tierra )

Journey back in time to unspoilt nature
Your exciting and diverse expedition begins in Salaverry in Peru. From here, you will travel back through time to discover the Huaca del Dragon Temple and Chan Chan*. Follow in the footsteps of the Chimu civilisation in what was once their capital city – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marvel at the former settlement area of the Mochica culture – which is around 2,000 years old – and the ruins of important Chimu shrines in the Moche Valley with the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon*. Built from millions of adobe bricks, the former is the largest solid construction in the Americas, whilst the latter is known for its luminous paintings and murals. These cultural treasures are followed by natural spectacles. From the coast of Peru you will travel by Zodiac to the small Isla Lobos de Tierra, the “island of sea lions”, which is also home to pelicans and blue-footed boobies.

Isla de la Plata/Ecuador

Isla de la Plata in Ecuador translates as “silver island”. It is said that Sir Francis Drake hid treasure here. It won’t take you too long to discover the island’s real riches: the animal life here – including red-footed boobies and Nazca boobies, frigate birds, turkey vultures and lava lizards – makes it a kind of miniature Galapagos.

Isla Flamenco (Panama City), arrival 19.30 hrs

A lifeline between two oceans
As you cross the equator you come ever closer to the highlight of your cruise: the Panama Canal. It dominates the region as well as the lives of people and animals that live here, and it will also play a major role in your activities around Panama City, which will allow you to experience the canal from different perspectives on shore. Isla Flamenco is situated directly in front of the skyline of Panama’s capital city, and when the BREMEN drops anchor here in the evening, your first walk will show just how closely modernity and the past exist here side by side. Enormous container ships at the shore contrast sharply with the historical buildings of Casco Viejo – the old town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond the city’s limits you will discover a very different kind of hustle and bustle during a nocturnal walk through the rainforest* – accompanied by the mysterious noises of the jungle. It is unforgettable – as are the activities by boat and cable car the next day: Gatun Lake and the rainforest*. Here the Panama Canal is a large reservoir; in its narrow side branches, you might spot capuchin monkeys, caimans and toucans. You will also see luscious green vegetation as you glide along. On the excursion to Panama City’s old town and the Miraflores Locks*, old and new converge. Alternatively, you can visit the Embera Indians* in the Chagres National Park, travelling in rustic, motorised canoes. Experience their hospitality and enjoy music and dancing under the leafy canopy of the ancient tropical jungle. And then you will finally see it – the highlight of the cruise – on a day trip on the Panama Canal.

The canal has undergone – and is still undergoing – extensive expansion so that it can take increasingly bigger container ships. Your team of experts will provide exciting facts about its construction and its significance, making the data and the details come alive. From the deck, enjoy views of grasslands, dense jungle and wild mangrove forests.
