Chile’s southern fjords (sailing through the Beagle Channel, passing the Garibaldi Glacier, sailing through the Strait of Magellan, Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, intensive cruising in the Chilean fjords, passing the Pio XI Glacier)

Tierra del Fuego: a world of wonders
Thundering waterfalls flow into tranquil mountain lakes, mighty glaciers rise up into the blue sky and the Andean condor flies majestically over its kingdom: the Chilean Fjords are one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the world. It is as though the small, manoeuvrable BREMEN was made for navigating through the labyrinth of channels and islands. Depending on local conditions, you can enjoy a number of Zodiac trips, allowing you to experience the beauty of Chile up-close. As soon as you enter the Beagle Channel, you will enjoy fantastic views of the shimmering tongue of ice that is the Garibaldi Glacier. Seabirds and seals dart to and fro near the mighty glacier’s edge. Follow the route taken by the first person to circumnavigate the globe through the famous Strait of Magellan to Punta Arenas. From there, a hike through Magallanes National Reserve* will take you into a world of diverse flora. The fauna is the focus of a trip to the penguins on the Isla Magdalena*. Here you will get a fascinating insight into the habitat of the thousands of Magellanic penguins on the island. Those who like to discover nature in a more active way will be in their element on a kayak tour of the Strait of Magellan*. Afterwards, the BREMEN will demonstrate its advantages as an expedition ship to the full as it passes through the narrow straits of the Smyth, Union and Kirke channels, before you reach a masterpiece of creation from Puerto Natales: the Torres del Paine National Park*. The granite peaks of the famous Torres rise up above glittering waterfalls, extensive forests and shimmering, aquamarine mountain lakes. You might see condors, guanacos and flamingos here. Over the next few days, the BREMEN will take plenty of time to cruise through the Chilean Fjords, with their breathtaking panoramas. Passing through the Valdes, Sarmiento and Inocentes channels, the ship will approach one of the highlights of your impressions of Patagonia: the Pio XI Glacier, one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. Enjoy impressive views of the blue-white foot of the glacier, which is several kilometres wide.

Chaiten is also testament to the power of nature. From here, you will discover the flora and fauna of Patagonia in the private Pumalin Park* – simply fascinating. Hiking paths lead you into the largest area of continuous forest in Chile, characterised by a temperate rainforest.

Sun, 11.03.2018

Puerto Montt

Snow-topped Osorno Volcano, not far from Puerto Montt, is truly outstanding in every sense. Marvel at its beauty on a tour of Chile’s lake district*. Or see the wonderful forests, steep mountains and extensive glaciers in a different, more active way and from a special perspective: while white-water rafting on the Petrohue river*.

Mon, 12.03.2018

Isla de Chiloe

The island of Chiloe is famous for the living mythology of its indigenous people, the Huilliche. Yet you are sure to find the magic of life just as fascinating when you go penguin watching on the island of Punihuil*. This is the only place in the world where Humboldt and Magellanic penguins breed side by side.

The old town of Iquique – with its restored wooden villas from the 18th and 19th centuries – is an exciting contrast. You will spend some time looking around and exploring the promenade on your own. Saltpetre works and geoglyphs* tell stories from times past.

Mon, 19.03.2018

The mysticism of these pre-Columbian geoglyphs on the mountainsides of Pintados will be outclassed when you get to Paracas and take a flight over the mysterious Nazca lines*, which are more than 2,000 years old. There are several theories about the origins of the geometric figures and monumental geoglyphs. Thrilling animal sightings complete the picture: with a bit of luck, you’ll spot sea lions, Peruvian gannets, pelicans and Inca terns in the animal paradise of the Islas Ballestas* – an unforgettable way to bid farewell to the natural wonders at the edge of the world.

Callao (Lima)/Peru, arrival 7.00 hrs
City tour
Scheduled flight from Lima to Frankfurt

Callao is Peru’s biggest harbour and close to the capital, Lima. Despite chaotic traffic conditions, a constant grey mist that the locals call “garua”, and the rapidly growing shanty towns – formerly known as “barriadas” and today called “pueblos jovenes” – numerous historic sights dating from the colonial era and impressive collections of Peruvian art offer visitors a wealth of interesting impressions.
