Cruise BRE1713

17.08.2017 - 11.09.2017

26 days (25 days cruise only)

Add your own chapter to the chronicle of the Northwest Passage, where legendary pioneers once made history. This is a thrilling sea route that only a few ships have conquered – but the BREMEN has already been here seven times. Based on our experience, we will embark on a new, grand adventure for the first time in 2017, following a fresh route that will take us into the realm of polar bears and whales. The journey itself matters more than the destination, and the ice will determine our course.

Please note that your choosen cruise is conducted in German only. All printed matters are available in German. Nevertheless our crew is fluent in English.

    Alaska (Point Hope, Barrow)

    A legend brought to life
The Northwest Passage: this region has captured the heart and soul of great seafarers. And when the BREMEN sets sail for an adventure in the wilderness between the Canadian Arctic and Greenland’s glacial coastline, you can also add your own chapter to the history of this special sea route. With the highest ice class plus a crew experienced in polar voyages and who react to new nautical challenges every day. Pack ice that forms suddenly, sparkling ice formations, fantastic views of gigantic glacier cliffs. On this challenging route, the captain and officers will decide which course to take, based on the weather and ice conditions. It’s an adventure in which you yourself are the explorer. At the beginning of your expedition, you will discover the ingenuity of the Inuit people in Point Hope, a settlement whose dune-like earth igloos are made partly out of whale bones. Barrow, one of the northernmost cities in the world, also has links to these giants of the sea. Many pods of whales swim by every summer, and with a little luck, you will be able to observe them from the deck.

Northwest Passage – from the Beaufort Sea to Foxe Basin

(Canadian Arctic, including Herschel Island, Franklin Bay, Victoria Island, Jenny Lind Island, cruising in the Victoria Strait, Gulf of Boothia, Fury and Hecla Strait, Igloolik, Melville Peninsula)

The many Zodiac rides and landings – at Herschel Island, for example – will ensure that you enjoy even more intense experiences. Accompanied by Canadian rangers, you will explore a former whaling station – perhaps as rough-legged buzzards circle overhead. Throughout the entire route, the BREMEN follows in the wake of famous explorers who gave their names to many of the places along the way. When you are cruising in the Beaufort Sea, for example, you will notice that Beaufort the explorer also gave his name to the scale used to measure wind speed. In Franklin Bay, the history of Franklin the explorer hangs in the air along with gases given off by the Smoking Hills, produced by layers of rocks containing pyrite. Together with the experts accompanying you on the cruise, you will lift the veil on the Inuit culture on Victoria Island. In the settlement of Holman, you will get an exciting glimpse into local handicrafts, while in Cambridge Bay you will learn about the “Copper Eskimos” and their tools, as well as about musk oxen. This historic area also bears witness to the bravery of Roald Amundsen – and his eventual fate. On Jenny Lind Island, you will enter the habitat of Arctic foxes, reindeer, Arctic hares and snowy owls. Will the “King of the Arctic” also make an appearance? On this cruise it is always worth looking out for polar bears. You will follow further in the footsteps of famous explorers at the entrance to Victoria Strait, where the “Erebus” – the ship from the Franklin expedition – once froze in the ice. While you are cruising in the strait, the tension will increase on board: will it be possible to pass through the narrow Bellot Strait, or will the ice conditions mean that the ship has to take the route through Peel Sound? Driven by curiosity and pioneering spirit, the BREMEN will dare to follow a new course beyond the usual routes, making the most of its highest ice class and its skilled crew. A new route to adventure
The very things that made journeys uncertain and risky for seafarers in the past are what make your expedition exciting today. Will the weather and ice conditions allow us to pass through the Gulf of Boothia along the remote western side of Baffin Island? The ship’s route is planned based on the experiences it will give you, and you can expect to see amazing sights, such as in the Fury and Hecla Strait. In 1822, the members of the Parry expedition, who were looking for the Northwest Passage, became the first Europeans to spend the winter in Igloolik. You can see for yourself how hospitable the Inuit are here, at the “place of the igloos”. Regular “visitors” to the Melville Peninsula include polar bears and walruses. Here – and throughout the cruise – the BREMEN will heave to for animal sightings. This means that you can easily observe sea eagles, seals and whales.

Hudson Strait (Cape Dorset, Diana Island, Akpatok Island)

In the region around Cape Dorset, settlers from 3,000 years ago left their mark at the beginning of the Hudson Strait. Remnants of the Dorset and Thule peoples have been found here. An atmospheric demonstration of traditional throat singing will provide an exciting cultural experience. On Diana Island, you will be able to experience how the pioneers felt all those years ago. In the middle of the tundra, you will keep a lookout for common ringed plovers, musk oxen and reindeer. Akpatok Island is characterised by a sublime landscape. Go out on a Zodiac ride and marvel at the limestone cliffs. There is a good chance of spotting a polar bear again here, before the BREMEN continues along the Hudson Strait.

    * Depending on the flight schedule, it may be necessary to change the destination airport (return flight). Important note on this expedition: For the first time, the BREMEN will tackle a new route through the Northwest Passage, which leads from the Bellot Strait in a southerly direction through the Fury and Hecla Strait into Foxe Basin, and then continues through the Hudson Strait. To ensure the greatest possible safety, the ship management will ultimately decide on the spot which route is possible. If the Fury and Hecla Strait is not passable, the BREMEN will head for the Peel Sound/Prince Regent Inlet and then take an alternative route – just as action-packed – north through the Canadian Arctic up to Lancaster Sound. The captain will decide on the best possible alternative.
