Ketchikan, cruising in the Misty Fjords, Wrangell, Petersburg
Ketchikan is Alaska’s centre for Native American culture. From here, you can go on a jeep and canoe trip on Revillagigedo Island*. Off the beaten path is where Alaska’s raw beauty unfolds. Or you can take a flight over the Misty Fjords* and look down at one of America’s largest natural treasures from a thrilling perspective. Deep inlets, snow-covered mountains and roaring waterfalls make this a region that will touch your soul – as will the cruise through these fjords, so-called because of the mist formations that are characteristic of this area. This is where Alaska’s Inside Passage begins – one of the most beautiful shipping routes in the world. Again and again, fascinating panoramas will be revealed to you as the BREMEN enters these narrow, twisting waterways – as only a small, manoeuvrable expedition ship can. In the picturesquely located town of Wrangell, active excursions await you. Go bear spotting at Anan Creek*, for example, and with a little luck you will see black bears and brown bears in the wild. Or let yourself be whisked away on a jetboat adventure on the Big River*. Alternatively, enjoy a flight over the LeConte Glacier* and sit back as incredible views of its blue shimmering surface and the vast landscape unfold before you. Petersburg is known as “Little Norway” – and not just because of its history. Today its houses are still decorated with painted garlands of flowers. This idyllic little fishing town is surpassed only by the beauty of nature – see it for yourself during a walk in Tongass National Forest*, the largest of its kind in the USA. Here, at the heart of Alaska’s Inside Passage, the BREMEN’s flexible course is almost like a “declaration of independence” for you, the explorer – very fitting for America.

Expedition days in Frederick Sound, Chatham Strait and Tracy Arm
Our route is determined by the experiences we’ll have, for example, when we pass through Frederick Sound and in the Chatham Strait. This is the best time to watch whales, sea lions and bald eagles from the deck or from the Zodiacs. The same applies to cruising in Tracy Arm, one of the most beautiful fjords in Alaska. When you’re not engrossed in watching animals, you can marvel at rock faces over 1,000 m (3,280 ft) high and the rugged ice tongues of the Sawyer Glacier, which look like abstract sculptures in blue.

Elfin Cove/Chichagof Island
At Chichagof Island’s fishing village Elfin Cove – whose population is just 30 – you will see how people in this region live in harmony with their wild surroundings. It is one of approximately 1,100 islands off the coast of the Alaskan mainland, which offer an enchanting panorama.

Relaxation at sea/
The BREMEN will then head for the Gulf of Alaska. Use this relaxing passage to talk to our experts – about how to identify different species of bear, for example.
Fri, 11.08.2017
On Kodiak, you will have the opportunity to delve deep into the interior of the island and go bear spotting by seaplane*. With a little luck and patience, you just might discover the mighty Kodiak bears, which can reach a height of 2.8 m (9.2 ft).
Sat, 12.08.2017
Kukak and Amalik Bay
In Kukak Bay and the sprawling Amalik Bay there’s a good chance you will see brown bears in their natural habitat from the Zodiacs.
Sun, 13.08.2017
- Mon, 14.08.2017
Aleutian Islands (Unga Island , Unalaska Island)
As the BREMEN cruises in the waters off Unga Island, perhaps there will be a whale sighting. Delight in the marine giant before you land and visit an abandoned fishing village. Nature is gradually taking over this corner of the earth once again. On Unalaska Island, your visit to North America’s oldest Russian Orthodox church will bring the region’s history to life.
Tue, 15.08.2017
St. Paul Island/Pribilof Islands
Don’t forget to look up at the blue sky – there are often majestic bald eagles circling above. They are a synonym for freedom – just like the seal colony on St. Paul Island. And you’ll remember the seals’ many neighbours – the crested auklets, parakeet auklets and horned puffins – long after the cruise has come to an end.

A co-developer of the Schueleruniversitaet (school pupils at university) programme in Kiel, she knows exactly how to inspire curiosity among young explorers.
