Relaxation at sea
St. Paul Island/Pribilof Islands
This special course will allow you to follow the call of the wild. Exciting Zodiac rides and landings promise thrilling expedition moments as you discover the wildlife of far-flung islands. At the coast of St. Paul Island, for example, you will see a seal colony, accompanied by the cries of crested auklets, parakeet auklets and horned puffins.
Aleutian Islands (Unalaska Island, Unga Island )
On Unalaska Island, the main island in the Aleutians, you might spot the USA’s national emblem, the mighty bald eagle, for the first time. You will be able to feel history hanging in the air when you visit North America’s oldest Russian Orthodox Church here. On Unga Island, you will follow the traces of a human settlement in an abandoned fishing village. And during a walk, the experts will demonstrate how nature is gradually taking over this corner of the world. If you’re lucky, you will see plenty of majestic marine animals on this route. Keep a lookout: perhaps you will be the first to spot a whale from the deck of the ship. And on shore, you will go looking for traces of our planet’s largest terrestrial predators – bears.
Amalik Bay and Kukak Bay
The island of Kodiak is home to the bears of the same name – they weigh up to 700 kg (1,543 lb) and can be up to 3 m (9.8 ft) in height when standing up straight. Take to the skies to go bear spotting by seaplane*.
Relaxation at sea/cruising through the Gulf of Alaska
Elfin Cove/Chichagof Island
At Chichagof Island’s Elfin Cove settlement – whose population is just 30 – you will see how people in this region live in harmony with nature.
Alaskas Inside Passage:
Expedition days in the Tracy Arm, Frederick Sound and the Chatham Strait
Alaska – the home of the whale
Behind Elfin Cove is where Alaska’s Inside Passage begins: a spectacular shipping route and a dream come true for passionate explorers. Dive into a world of deep fjords, scattered islands and rare animals. Now is the best time to watch whales, sea lions and bald eagles and discover the perfect soul of Alaska. When you’re not engrossed by the animals, you can marvel at rock faces over 1,000 m (3,280 ft) high and thundering waterfalls as you cruise in Tracy Arm with the impressive backdrop of the shimmering Sawyer Glacier. Powerful encounters with nature also await you in Frederick Sound and in the Chatham Strait, where – with a bit of luck – you’ll discover whales and sea lions.
Petersburg , Wrangell, cruising in the Misty Fjords, Ketchikan
Petersburg will welcome you with its atmospheric mountain landscape and its picturesque harbour. Known as “Little Norway”, the town still has houses decorated with painted garlands of flowers. They are only surpassed by the magnificent plants and trees that you will see during a walk in Tongass National Forest*, the largest of its kind in the USA. The picturesquely located town of Wrangell is a starting point for further exciting excursions. For example, from here you can go bear watching at Anan Creek* and spot black bears and brown bears. Or you can take a flight over the LeConte Glacier* and marvel at the sight of the gigantic Stikine Icecap. The jetboat adventure on the Big River* will whisk you through this former gold-digging territory at high speed. You will also discover the raw wilderness of Alaska off the beaten track when you cruise through the Misty Fjords, so-called because of the mist formations that are typical of this area. This is where you will find Ketchikan, Alaska’s centre of Native American culture. Go on a jeep and canoe trip on Revillagigedo Island* or admire one of America’s greatest natural treasures on a flight over the Misty Fjords*. Deep inlets, snow-covered mountains and roaring waterfalls make this a region that will touch your soul.
Cruising through British Columbia’s Inside Passage
Vancouver/Canada, departure 22.00 hrs
Overnight stay on board
The BREMEN will then spend two days cruising through British Columbia’s Inside Passage, with its many islands, wooded mountains and small Native American settlements along the banks, which will appear to glide past slowly. This splendid culmination to your expedition might even be rounded off by sightings of orcas and sea eagles – symbols of freedom that you will remember long after you have left.
