    Rishiri/Japan

Completely unique: The Kuril Islands and Kamchatka
The elemental beauty of the Pacific Ring of Fire. On every day of your expedition you will see nature as you have never experienced it before, for example, when you discover the volcanic island of Rishiri with the ship’s experts.

    Sunday, 25.06.2017

    Sakhalin/Russia (Korsakov, Tyuleny )

The island of Sakhalin in the Sea of Okhotsk marks the border between Japan and Russia. Korsakov is steeped in history: there used to be a penal colony here, which gained literary notoriety thanks to Anton Chekhov. Nowadays this isolated area is home to an impressive range of wildlife, which you will discover off the coast of Sakhalin. Tyuleny means “isle of seals” and, as the name suggests, it is home to a large number of seals and Steller sea lions.

    Tuesday, 27.06.2017 to
    Wednesday, 28.06.2017

Kuril Islands (including Yankicho (Ushishir), Atlasova, Ptichiy Islands)

The Kuril Islands, a string of islands formed by volcanic activity, extend over 1,200 km (745 mi.) in the Pacific Ocean. Overgrown mountain peaks shimmer through the mist and the spray thunders against steep cliffs: time and again, the primordial landscape will take your breath away – for example, when you reach the interior of the steep caldera on Yankicho by Zodiac, weather permitting. The highest volcano of the Kuril Islands rises up majestically on Atlasova; behind it the coast of the Ptichiy Islands spreads out before you. With a bit of luck, you will see seals and sea otters in the kelp forests.

    Friday, 30.06.2017 to
    Tuesday, 04.07.2017

Kamchatka (Russkaya Bay , Zhupanova , Bering , two days in Petropavlovsk)

On the east coast of Russia, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea envelop the Kamchatka Peninsula. With its mighty volcanoes, geysers and great forests, this is a landscape of monumental dimensions. Your route is adjusted daily according to the weather and the expected sightings – for example, so that you can land at Russkaya Bay and discover sea otters. The Zodiacs turn even the Zhupanova river into your own personal expedition region. Here – and during the rest of the journey – you should keep a lookout for brown bears out hunting and sea eagles. You will set foot on historic terrain on the island of Bering, where the “Russian Columbus” Vitus Bering ran aground in 1741 while looking for a land connection between Asia and America on behalf of the Russians. You, on the other hand, will be looking for seals and orcas, whose black-and-white backs can be spotted in the water. To marvel at the volcanic landscape of the sweeping taiga from the perspective of the sea eagle, take off from Petropavlovsk on a helicopter flight to the Valley of the Geysers*, which was formed 20,000 years ago. Alternatively, a flight to Nalychevo Nature Park* will take you to hot springs where you can bathe, or you can discover the region’s unspoilt landscape during a challenging hike up the Avacha volcano*.

Aleutian Islands/Alaska/USA (including Kiska Island , Tanaga Island , Seguam , Unalaska Island)

The Aleutian Islands: a succession of natural wonders
At the point where the North American Plate and the Pacific Plate meet, volcanic activity has created one of the most exciting expedition territories of all time: the Aleutian Islands, which rise up out of the Bering Sea between Kamchatka and the coast of Alaska. The BREMEN will take you to remote islands that only a few ships visit – such as Kiska Island, home to seals and bald eagles. Tanaga Island, with its volcano that reaches almost 2,000 m (6,561 ft) into the sky and its hot bubbling springs, reveals the sheer force of nature. At the beach on Seguam, the ship’s experts will tell you fascinating facts, whether you’re interested in volcanology or the anatomy of the Steller sea lion. What’s more, you will have plenty of opportunities to see whales up-close in the area around the Aleutian Islands. Dutch Harbor on Unalaska Island bears witness to Alaska’s history; it has the oldest Russian Orthodox church in North America.

    Relaxation at sea

    Wednesday, 12.07.2017

Bering Strait (St. Matthew Island, Hall Island)

As the BREMEN sets off through the Bering Strait, you will delight in the rich tundra of St. Matthew Island. With a bit of luck, in this landscape dotted with gentian, monk’s hood and angelica, you will spot the Arctic foxes that are common to the area. The cliffs of Hall Island are a spectacular culmination to your expedition. With Zodiac rides that take you past colonies of seabirds and opportunities to watch walruses, the wonders of this wild environment will remain vivid in your memory for a long time to come.
